When I want to save my document following error is reported: "An unknown error has occurred." And then the program does freeze or quits.
I noticed it occurs it doesn't happen with small files. I have 512 RAM and an 80 Gb HD, so space and memory shouln't be the problem.

Anyone some experience with this..?

make your illustrator scrach disks other than your primary boot drive... (my guess ;) )

Are you on a mac or pc?
If PC try defragging your drive.

The freezing and quiting though is odd, unless you are on a PC.

Allright, I discovered I only get an error when "create pdf compatible file" is checked while saving. Anyone got an idea..?

That can be a ram problem. If you are running anything along with Illustrator, Adobe recommends at least 512 ram with a gig highly recommended.
Does the same error appear when you run only Illustrator?

It can be a scratch error too, still. What are your default PDF settings? I've seen that error sometimes if there are extremely high resolution images in the file and the pdf settings are too high.

Same error does appear when I only run Illustrator. It's only something from a week ago. Earlier I never had that problem....
And it also happens with documents without any images.
Now I save everything without creating an pdf compatible file, the only thing is I can't import any ai.-file in Photoshop.

You never answered if you were on a Mac or a PC. It could be you have a corrupt font too. If it just started acting up a week ago, check for that, or try trashing preferences or reloading Illustrator.

I have got the very same problem. Illustrator was doing "save for web" all right until yesterday, now it says "Could not complete this operation because an unknown error occured".

However, this problem ony occurs when I am trying to save a picture that is more than appx. 650px wide. If I change the size of the pic to less than that, it saves ok.

I am completely lost. I do have a PC. Many thanks for your wise thughts!

I checked on the Adobe forums for this error and came up with a couple more things.

If you are using glyphs of a truetype font you may get this error message depending on how old the fonts are. Try removing the glyphs from your text and see if the problem recurs. If it doesn't try to find a postscript version of the font.

Also, if you have moved or removed any fonts out of the "Required" folder in Library>Application support>Adobe>fonts>Reqrd you may get this error. Font management programs will sometimes do this if you aren't careful. Don't remove the required fonts.

I have a PC. I'm not using glyphs or any text at all, I mean it even occurs without any tekst. I didn't moved/removed any fonts out of the required folder.
I will check my fonts, maybe something is corrupted.

Thanks for the effort so far...

Allright...I tested something. As long I don't use any text/font it saves with "pdf comp. file", if used any text/font it doesn't. I'm close to the solution..thanx

Thank you for your advise. However, my problem even occurs if there is no text (only graphics) in the file.

I nonetheless deleted all fonts, which I installed since the last time "save for web" had worked. It did not solve the problem.

I even uninstalled Illustrator and installed it again. I still cannot save 600+px files for the web. Have you got any more ideas?

Has there been any fix or reason for this error. I've just started getting this error as well. Anyone have an update?

No one from Adobe is stepping up on that one. There are at least 4 threads over there in the PC Illustrator forum. If any of you have CS1 rather than CS2, there is a fix posted over there.
Search string was:
An unknown error has occurred CS2

Good luck.

Hi and what's up, folks. after pulling 85% of my hair out, I think i figured it out. it looks like the save error was a transparency flattener preset problem. my problem at the begining was that at first i couldnt save it as a cs2 ai file and had to save it down to an 8 or save it as a pdf. i went to Adobe's website and they had the suggestion of closing Illustrator, renaming the preference file AIprefs and then restart the program. tried it, didn't work. i dont know what made me think of it but i remembered just before the saving errors, i use to have those "flattening transparency" messages. so i went into the CS2's settings folder and renamed the Transparency Flattener Presets file to Transparency Flattener Presets2. before that, i did another impulsive thing and copied my Illustrator 10's AIprefs file into the CS2's.

AND IT WORKED!!!!!

here's the path to the settings folder to get to both the AIPrefs and Transparency Flattener Presets files

:C/Documents & Settings/User/Application Data/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator CS2 settings.

hope it works for yall. talk to yall later. i got a vehicle wrap to finish. bye!!

I couldn't get that to work for me. Crap. I hope they fix this soon. I heard that a lot of the CS2 stuff is buggy, not just Illustrator. Gah!

yep! it also seems to be linked to the Suite. and acrobat throws everything off. see, the acrobat is like the gateway to saving any adobe application so that it can be opened by another adobe program (like being able to copy something in illustrator and paste it in photoshop). personally, i uninstalled my adobe acrobat and i dont have those annoying transparency errors no more. the acrobat flattens the transparency, i think. they gotta look at this program and fix it pronto. the new whistles on the new cs are too good to be having these bugs. anybody checked out the new 3d swatches? they are SWEEEEEEEEET!! anyways i'll do more diggin and see what else i can come up with. meantime, hang in there!!

Just as I had pressed "Ctrl + s", my PC blue screened me and rebooted. After that, AI wouldn't save .ai files. It could save them as pdf. and "save for web".
If I tryed to save as ai. it would simply reply "An unknown error has occured." and then I'd be right back where I was - with a not-frossen PC or AI.

Renaming the AIprefs and Transp... files as mentioned above worked perfectly.

Thank you!

I have a friend who experienced the same thing and found that her Virtual Memory allocation was set to custom size and was lower than the recommended allocation. I changed that to System Managed Size and everything worked perfectly.

You might want to try it.

To set your Virtual Memory Allocation, go to Start, Control Panel, System. In the System properties window, go to Advanced tab, click the Settings button under Performance group. In the Performance Options window, to to Advanced tab, and click the Change button under the Virtual Memory heading. Select System Managed Size and click Set. Click OK all the way back. Windows needs a restart for the changes to take effect.

Hope this helps.

I was having a problem saving files. only files with text (if i converted them to curves it was ok)and only when i had pdf checked. I checked a machine that was working and found that my "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Fonts\Reqrd\CMaps" file only had 53 files while the other had 173. i copied it and now its working fine
:D

Wow. Missing that many files almost sounds like an inadvertent mal-ware deletion problem. Do any of the missing files turn up in your cleanings?

I also had this issue and got CS2 working after reading this thread. For me I installed CS which put 171 files in "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Fonts\Reqrd\CMaps" as appose to the 3 I found there.

Thanks a mill.

OK, I get the same "Unknown error has occurred" when trying to reopen an Adobe Illustrator CS2 file created earlier. If I save earlier as an EPS file, I don't get this error, just the message of insufficient memory. I have tried to change the memory in the AIPrefs file, but this seems to have no effect. I have 2 GB of RAM. Also tried resetting so that the System handles the Virtual Memory (should not need it, but...) and that did not help. And yes, I renamed the Settings folder so that all of the files were created. And yes, I renamed the Transparency file. None of this helped...

I am using a brand new PC running Windows XP (Service Pack 2), AI 12.0.1 (CS2), Intel chip and so on. This is a new install of Adobe Illustrator CS2, but I got the same error on my old install on an older laptop.

Definitely seems to be associated with large files. So how do I change Illustrator so that it will use closer to the RAM I actually have on the machine. The EPS read, for example, is failing at 680MB, which is less than 1/3 of the RAM (not to mention Virtual Disk Space) that I have on the computer...
