I recently upgraded from OS 9.2 to Tiger. It's been a steep learning curve from a production standpoint, but I've had pretty good success everywhere but Quark. Not that I'm surprised by that or anything!

Anyway, Quark crashes almost every time I use it with a certain customer's files. These are 30-50 page booklets which list Pilot Travel Center locations throughout the country and are custom printed for each trucking/transport company Pilot is trying to woo into using them as their primary fuel source. Long story short: when I hold down option to "scrub" through the document, it often crashes. I tried using the document layout panel and just clicking to advance pages, but it crashes then too. Anyone had the same problems?

Thanks,
Jason

What version of Quark?
Running Quark thru Classic sometimes causes problems but my best bet is you have a corrupt font in the document. Not a big deal in OS9 but bad fonts will bring X to its knees right quick.

DZ the Quark Goddess will be along shortly I'm sure. She may have a better answer.

Sorry, I should've been more clear.

G5 dual 2.0, 2 gigs of Ram
Mac OS 10.4.1
Quark 6.5

I think the fonts may be the culprit here. The setup for these documents was created back in Quark 3.1, and has changed very little since then. How can I diagnose this font issue, and how can I correct it on about 800 different files?

ACK Jason! What a pain eh? Sounds like a font issue to me too. How many fonts would you say are in that pub? Were they neat and tidy and kept it nice and under 5 or are there bazillions?

If the problem is a font...I'm not sure how the hell to diagnose that honestly. Can you tell what page you are on when it caputs each time? OS X is quick to be a pain in the ass when there is a font issue. I'm gonna have to think a bit on this one to see if I can be of some kinda help. I will get back to this as soon as I can, hopefully one of us can help with some kinda advice!

The easiest (and also the hardest) is to get a font management program that diagnoses corrupt or duplicate fonts.

A lot of the real old TT fonts are causing problems too.

Wow! I don't envy you!

You could start diagnosing by splitting the booklets in half and seeing which half crashes you. Then split that one in half and so on until you find the culprit font or page that is corrupt. Then remove the images or fonts one at a time until you find the culprit. I once had to do this with an 80 page catalog. And in the end, it was a corrupt image. If your base file goes back to Quark 3, that could also be a problem.

If you suspect only fonts, take half the fonts out first to see which group crashes you. Then half it again and so on.

This is a tedious method, but it does work.
