I'm not a designer, but I have to use Quark for work.
I'm working on a new project where I need to use columns, and ordinarily that's fine. But for my opening page I need to use non-standard columns (ie, 12mm margin, 42mm column, 4mm margin, 86mm column, 4mm margin, 50mm column and 12 mm margin on an A4 page.
I can't work out how to create this basic template.
Any advice gratefully received.

Do you know how to make master pages? Make a master page with the specs you need and apply it to your first page. You probably already have a master page entitled A, just make a new one, probably from the pages pallette. Or you can do it the ghetto way and just use drag some guides in their where you need them as use that. I would explain more about master pages but I haven't used Quark in a year and don't have the software in front of me right now to guide you through step by step, good luck!

you can designate columns on your masterpages as well. Tell it how many you would like and the gutter size inbetween.

It is very hard to work with quark without a manual. Have your boss buy you one it's the right thing to do.
MAster pages are a good idea but they too can be tricky. Depending on how you are going to flow the text in the collumns, i suggest you draw as many boxes as you need and use your guides which you can drag from the edge of the rulers on the side of your page. There is a information and tool bar that allows you to see the size and placement of your boxes so you can keep track. Another way to creat collumns that are consistent is
a) create one box
b) go to the file menu bar at the top of your screen and click on ITEM and go to MODIFY. Ther e will be a few optioons, one of them is text, click on that and you see options for collumns. You can choose how many and the widths between them. You'll have to experiment. The issue with this way of creating collumns is you have to watch how your text flows.
Good Luck
