  • Duck out of water! Beginner advice please?

So, I have a Chromebook (just below the ones that NOW have android). First thing I want to do is get a Mac, but I don't even know where to start! I'm on a bit of a budget, so basically I'm looking for the middle mark - something that has the memory/power needed for Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc., but doesn't cost me a fortune! Apparently anything with retina can't get upgrades?
Secondly, I'm teaching myself. Are there any free/cheap sites that you know of that could assist in learning? Besides YouTube? Or shall I just jump into Adobe and learn as I go? I'm not planning on going huge here, just wanting to be able to create some stuff on the side while i work at my 6-6 job!

Can you get a mac without a retina? Can you get a macbook for much less than $2K?
A lot of laptops now have the ram soldered in at the plant before purchase, not just macs.

As for free/cheap sites, that's about the same as free/cheap designers. You get exactly what you pay for.

Computers and software don't make you a designer. Anyone can do pretty pictures on a machine. There's more than a few years of study, then more than a few years of learning to apply that study. Not exactly something you are gonna learn online from a few free/cheap sites.

Best of luck with your side job.

I've been a mac designer for about 10 years or so now. I wouldn't have it any other way. But I've always gone with an IMac desktop. Less money, more kick, and upgradable if you know what you're doing.

But if you're just starting, and self training at that, a new Mac isn't going to do you much good. A cheap PC with 8gb of ram and a reasonable processor/graphics card will do.

There's an old saying "It's not the arrow, It's the archer" - basically learn the trade first, fancy equipment can come later. Look into some local schools with a graphics program if you're serious about it. It's a long hard road to make a buck in this field.

Thanks for the feedback. That all makes a lot of sense. I'll take these points and re-work things....

There are a lot of opportunities for refinement there, so it's best to start with a general corrective statement: Everything is too large. More specifically, there is no focal point; no hierarchy; no...
