I'm Paul and I'm 32 years old, living in Osaka and stuck in the English teaching rut. Spent too much time here and looking to start a graphic design career with a wife and a kid upon returning to the US. If you're determined you can make it. There'll be a lot to learn but hopefully youve got some talent and an eye. (for good design that is). Good luck and welcome to the forum. I was teaching English too for ages. I'm now 32 and have just been offered a position as web developer for Six Apart, so it is definately possible.
I've had a freelance business for a while, and that was how I got my foot in the doorComment

Welcome and goodluck with your career. Just take it one step at a time. Don't burn any bridges just in case you find it's not for you. You'll find a lot of us have day jobs and do freelancing on the side.Comment
