  • Allow Myself to Introduce Myself

    Hi,

My name's Sophie and I'm an Msc Publishing student at Edinburgh Napier University.

There is an element of graphic design involved in my publishing course - we design book covers and internal pages.

As part of the course we're going to be publishing a new, not-for-profit edition of the Scottish historical fiction novel "The New Road" by Neil Munro. It's a work in progress and we've just finished designing 6 potential covers, each of them using a section from the painting 'General Wade's Road' by Claudia Massie (that's the road "The New Road"'s title refers to).

Anyway, we are looking for feedback regarding which of the covers we should use and why, and I though it would be a good idea to ask professional graphic designers for their opinion, which is why I'm posting this here.

If you have a few moment to take a look and cast a vote then please go here: http://poll.fm/3l97k

If you'd like to know more about the project then please go here: newroadmunro.wordpress.com

And if you'd like to comment on the covers on this thread then please do. Feedback is appreciated.

    Many thanks!

    Sophie

        Welcome Sophie!

I picked cover 1 because it looks the most professional. Zapfino is overused in my opinion and reminds me of hairdressers signs and wedding invitations.

          Welcome.

I voted, but I don't know if it counted. There ay be a delay in results, but my choice didn't show.

I'd pick version 1 too. I don't know about hairdressers and wedding invites, but that face reminds me of too many flakey self-help books, which -- with the title of this novel -- could make it easily mistaken for. What is the source of the calligraphic hilly landscape? I love the loose beauty in those lines. A kind of Japanese quality to it.

Sounds like an interesting book. I do wonder though, because of its historical significance, if the publisher wouldn't want to add SOME kind of text message to that effect.
