Hi everyone, I'm brand new to the site and I'm really excited about joining this forum for support and help with my designs! I am currently a lowly freelancer, but I make good money (for a student) by mostly designing posters for other students on my college campus. I have also designed a few T-shirts, and I'd like to know more about designing, specifically, graphics for shirts. I already know about most techniques like halftones and layer-splitting for print, but I would like to be more skilled in the designing process. For example, I know diddly about color theory; I've been going by simply what looks good to me. I rely heavily on Illustrator CS5, and I dabble in Photoshop CS2.

Are there any books anyone would suggest for a budding graphic designer? Thanks!

          Welcome.

You mentioned you are a student - are you in school for graphic design or something else? Many of us are going to recommend you take some courses, so knowing where you're at now will help.

Thanks garricks, found some great stuff there.

Thanks KitchWitch, but unfortunately, no. I'm studying psychology and philosophy. My school is a big science school and it doesn't even offer any design courses, so I've kind of been on my own pursuing graphic design.

It might be time to change to a more appropriate school. Im sure there are schools that offer both psychology and design if that's what you are interested.

My parents are paying for my college and they'd never allow me to pursue the arts. But I figured that if I become semi-successful with it then hopefully I could pursue it further. I found a few sites online that host t-shirt designing competitions. I'd really like to break into that. I even found a few sites that hire amateur graphic designers to create shirts, hoodies, posters etc.. I thought that if I could send in a few great shirt designs, I could land that job. If I can get that far on my own.

If you decide to submit designs to websites, be very careful of the rules for submission. There are a lot of contest sites that only pay you if your work 'wins,' and they keep your work no matter what. Don't get scammed or shined into doing free work.

If your parents would allow you to work while you go to school, a job in a print shop can be an excellent place to learn.
