Ok, I say I'm old but I'm not that old!! I'm 28 and new to Graphic Design.

Hello everybody and look forward to plenty of talk with you all!!

Where do I start? Anyways, I've always been really good at drawing and graphic design at school. They were my most strongest subjects and loved them to bits. I guess back then I knew I wanted to be a graphic designer and I know this might sound stupid but I really thought to myself that I was never really good enough to be one. I have no idea why, so I've been in retail my whole life.
Something happend in my life not so long ago and completely changed the way I think about things now, and you know what, I am good enough to be a graphic designer, and I will be and I can't wait. I've relised it's always been a dream of mine to become one and that's where you come in guys!!
So where do I start now? I've never been to collage before and dropped out my highers at school to go work. I'm from Scotland btw, and I'm not sure if this is an American or Brittish forum but if you need me to answer any questions I'd be happy to! So where to I go from here? That's my first question to you all!

Thanks again people if you read this and looking so forward to you's all getting back to me!!!!

Hi gunn and welcome to GDF!

We have members from all over, with a fair number of American and Canadians on board; and Aussie & Kiwi folks too. Europe is represented, as is Asia – and pretty much the rest of the world too.

When you get settled please read this as well as these very important threads. They will give you all the info you need on how the forum runs, the rules and regs, and give you some background info on our long running, inside jokes

    Enjoy!

        Welcome.

The bacon thing is just our unnatural love for all things bacon. You'll see soon enough.

Good to have a Scot on board (no offense if we have others and I missed it)! I'm in the US, but have Scottish ancestry and would love to travel there one day.

You're not even close to old mate. I'm 28 too.

How green are you in terms of design? Have you meddled at home? Or are you a clean slate?

                Thanks Red Kittie Kat!!

Buda: Well I just I'm starting off in a clean slate! I guess my plan is to get a portfolio of some sort now? That's why I'm on here to ask the questions from the experts, to guide me on the right track. But I do draw and design at home on a sceatch pad all the time. I just love to design!! Where do I start?

A child-like man is not a man whose development has been arrested; on the contrary, he is a man who has given himself a chance of continuing to develop long after most adults have muffled themselves in the cocoon of middle-aged habit and convention.

Welcome gunn, as one child-like person (not sure if you're male or not) to another.

If you're a clean slate, you'll need to get some kind of an education before you even think about putting together a portfolio to show off everything you have learned. Whether you are disciplined enough to teach yourself, or go to a dedicated school for design, is up to you.

Personally, I would never be disciplined enough to be trusted to sit at my computer for 1 to 3 years and learn the ins and outs of graphic design theory and software without being distracted by Facebook, Youtube, this forum, lolcats etc. But if you are, more power to you!

Once you have a learned the design basics, you are better equipped to learn smaller aspects of design on your own. Say, you have completed your design studies, you could probably learn the basics of pre-press on your own.

Or get a job in sign shop willing to show you the ropes. You'll learn a lot there fast.

I just missed the Fringes when I was in Scotland for a week, some time back.
Went to the the Mel Gibson Braveheart memorial (at least that's what the tour guide called it before correcting himself...). Actually made it to the top without stepping on anyone's toes. LOL.

And a pub crawl around Edinburgh. It was raining so freakin hard I have no idea where we went. Didn't really care after a while either. Long train ride back to the B&B in Stirling. I just gotta say, you guys have a weird concept of what is considered a 10 minute walk.
"Oh, the train station is just a 10 minute walk." Mighta been going out. More like an hour coming back, if you can't walk a straight line.

                            Grand time!

Thanks Buda and PrintDriver for you advise!!

I'm thinking of doing a few courses in art and design NC part time while
I'm still working then have a few things under my belt before I go tackle a graphic design course. I'll also need to sit down when I can to make a plan of action. What skills are best need to become a great graphic designer?
