  • Career Change Advice

    #1
Hi all. I'm new to this forum. I found it when doing some research on changing careers.

I'm 35 and live in the NYC area, and I'm considering going back to school to get a certificate in graphic design at Parsons. I have a BFA (Fine Arts major) from a liberal arts school. I have done some graphic design and web work, but have focused most of my career on cultural events planning, art and interior design.

I'd like to change careers to become an Artistic Director, and since I have a strong background in art and design, but lack any real formal education in graphic design I'm looking for feedback and advice.

It seems most of the jobs I look at that are of interest require a graphic design degree. I'd really appreciate any advice or guidance anyone could offer.

    Thanks!

Hi Pucci and welcome to GDF.

We ask all new members to read the threads posted HERE and HERE. They explain how the forum runs, the rules, frequently discussed topics and our inside jokes. Enjoy your stay!

As you already have a BFA, see if you can get a Masters in GD. It won't give you the formal design education that you require, but you'll be ultimately more employable as an art director.

This, or check how much cross-over your BFA has with a BFA in Design. I was double-majoring for awhile with Design and Studio Arts (painting and/or drawing). In the end I dropped some of the studio courses but could have finished in another semester or two. You might not have far to go for a BFA in Design.
