  • Weekend Movie Review - Memorial Day weekend.

    #1
Hello my fellow GDFers. Hope everyone had a great holiday weekend and got some much needed rest. I know I did. Anyway, down to bidness.

Saw 2 movies this weekend.. one brand new and one a few months old but not yet out on DVD.

    Day After Tomorrow

I love disaster flicks; Twister, Deep Impact, The Core, Poseidon Adventure, Earthquake, etc. I take it for what they are worth, eye candy. I have heard a lot of people ripping this latest one. Geologist call it 'laughable' cause none of this stuff could really happen. IT'S A MOVIE! Some friends I know in Boston saw it at a screening and said it was awful, no plot. they don't move the characters along. WHO CARES! I don't care about the characters. I want to see cities get wrecked, people get sucked up into tornados. How much plot can you expect? It's a popcorn flick. See, sometimes I think people are too ultracritical. I mean, this is not a thinking man's flick people! I didn't even go into it thinking it would be. I got what a wanted out of it, a GREAT summer blockbuster. GREAT entertainment. I would rank it up there as the best disaster movie I have seen, next to Deep Impact. The special effects are FANTASTIC. I loved every second of this movie and wasn't bored once. Is it fluff? sure? Plausible?, actually yes.. I think it could be. Let me get into the idea of it...

Basically, because we all are uncaring a-holes overusing our planets natural resources, this has caused the polar ice caps to break off and melt. In turn, it causes a shift in the North Atlantic current that basically gives us our heat to survive. Once this current is changed, it changes our weather patterns and causes holy hell to happen. Tornados rip through LA (which is SPETACULAR), hurricanes happen in England, etc. Well of course there is always a radical scientist that has foreseen this (Dennis Quaid) and tried to warn the US government for years, but they, in turn, don't want to hear about it (and the actors playing the Prez and VP look strangely like 2 real people we know now). Well when this all happens it's an 'I told you so moment'. So the earth is now going into a new ice age. 3 MASSIVE storms form over the artic and move their way down to the south. So everyone south of NC has to GET OUT (cause the storms will last 7-10 days and make it to that point before they crap out). NYC gets flooded by a massive tidal wave (because of the ice caps melting... makes sense). Dennis Quaid's son (Jake Gyllenhaal) is there and gets stuck. Him and his small band of humans wait out the storms (cause they will kill you in a second) in the NYC library. Quaid is now treking from DC to NYC to find his son. The first half of the film is disaster movie and the second half is search and rescue. I think it works well. Like I said, I was never bored. Was always entertaining. Which is what I wanted out of it. There are some sappy moments, but it humanizes the movie. Nothing over the top. It does NOT deserve the criticism it is getting. Lighten up people!

    Cool poop!

    Starsky & Hutch

Saw this in a second run thearte yesterday. Missed it the first time around, just too much to see and it got sent to the wayside. I am a fan of the show. I watched it when I was a kid. LOVE that phucking car. Second to the General Lee on my list (and right above Kitt from Knight Rider). I was expecting sort of a spoof of the show, like the Brady Bunch movie. but it was not that, but it was in a way. It poked fun at itself indirectly. I take it that most know the story. Starsky (Ben Stiller) is the straight by the book cop and Hutch (Owen Wilson) is the , less then straight cop. They get teamed together and you have instant chemistry. Well I have to say perfect casting. Stiller and Wilson work the roles just as well as the originals. The movie is based in the 70s (this is how it pokes fun at itself, using a lot of the 70s looks and music) and there is a new form of Coke (not the drink, the drug) on the market. It is undetectable by dogs, etc. Vince Vaughn plays the crimelord and does a great job. The movie plays out like a longer episode of S & H. It's funny and still action packed. Like I said, I was expecting a spoof and got a good drama, action flick with some humor thrown in. They do touch upon the 'gay' relationship between S & H, but it subtle and underlying. Enough to get a laugh out of the ones that remember the series. If your a fan of the seris, rent it. I think it will be out on DVD soon.

    Cool poop for sure.

This coming week I have no choice but to see the new Harry Potter. My wife is a HUGE fan of the books. I think they are a little boring (the movies, never read the books), but i'm willing to give it a shot.

Defjoe, what about Chronicles of Riddick? You going to see that?

I saw the Day after Tomorrow. I thought it was a good movie. It was funny though, b/c I guess from the whole 'ice' theme, my bf and I were a lot colder than normal in the theater, and when we both walked outside were seriously expecting like cold weather or something. It was kinda funny. So bring your jacket to that movie. Or you'll freeze to death.

DD.. I have a friend that said the same thing as you. After watching the movie he was 'surprised' it was so warm out. He felt you really got sucked into the idea of the ice age.

The 'Wolves' in Day After Tomorrow were incredibly goofy looking. Everything else in the show was fine but the rediculous man-eating 'dogs from hell' were totally unbelievable.

I liked the show. Those I went with said it sucked. It was raining and hailing like a son-of-a-biatch when we left the theatre. VERY eerie feeling.

I found some really cool ways to play with cotton candy.
Wish i had seen ShrekII instead though.

it was great, pinnochio, blind mouse, and some others were watching the wedding ball on tv. during commercials they show a preview to the next cops episode and it just so happens to be shrek, donkey and puss being chased by the castle guards (police) and getting caught. it was hilarious. what about the clips from other movies? my favorite was puss leaning back in the chair and getting splashed by water. what a maniac!

as funny as it was, i still like the first shrek the best. the music was better imo, with the rock songs inteads of all that pop music. it took a whole 30-45-min for the story to develop and it was slow. my little girl got disinterested when shrek and donkey changed. will try not to give too much away for those that haven't seen it, so i'll leave it at that.
