(kind of a spin off from the classic lines from clients thread..)
i dunno if you guys did this already but i reckon we should have a list of GDF rules we must show to all clients before they offer us work...

    something similar to:

1: Unless we've agreed on a price or I'm on salary, i will not 'do 5 different designs for you to choose from'.
2: I will not accept your logo in 72dpi gif or jpg format for printwork.
3: 3 A4 sides of text in word will not fit in an A5 advert.
4: When sending an image to me, do not insert it in a Word file before you send it.
5: I will not use 'comic sans'. Ever.

    ...etc. What do you think?
can you think of any more?

    starbursts are evil.

I will not replace the letter S with a $ - it isn't clever, it looks cheap.

Swooshes do not a logo make.

The fact that an image shows up on google image search does not make it public domain.

If you force me to change my design I am not responsible for it looking like crap.

            lol @ PD

Asking me to work for free will result in unpleasant splinters as my door promptly closes in your face. (*does not apply to charity work)

I can not rotate the photo of your car so that you can get a front view of it if the image you provided to me is a shot of the side. This is not CSI.

Placing a photo in a vector program and saving it does not make it a vector file.

Do not ask me to remove someone else's copyright tagline from the image you got off the internet.

Do not send work in a Publisher file, especially if it's an 8.5 x 11 broken into four seperate sections to be cut equally and your measurements are off, so I have to help the secretary figure out how to make four cuts instead of two.

Oh, and I'M THE DESIGNER, NOT YOU.

If I ask you to send me your logo and you ask me for my fax number, the deal is dead.

OMG, I have been laughing for about 3 minutes straight from that!

                              How about:

If you don't like the design, tell me what needs to change or it stays as is. I won't randomly make changes until you decide what you want.

I think you've chosen an incredibly difficult subject for this style of illustration, for a beginner. Something that could more easily be posterized and broken down into 3 or 4 values would be a good...

Clients pay you to come up with ideas. They can select a designer based on their portfolio. That's what a portfolio is for. But shopping around for custom work and paying only if they use it is wrong....

The job I have now, I was told over 400 people had applied for it. There's a ton of competition out there. If you're passionate about it and never stop studying it, you can be good. Best way to get ahead...

A flexible set-up for your portfolio will be more efficient in the long-term IMO. You will be able to customize your portfolio pieces to the sector for which you are applying.
