  • Are you from outside the US?

    #1
I am asking for homework assistance but hopefully it'll be an interesting conversation nonetheless

We have an assignment to talk to some people from other countries and find out what may be considered an idiom or cliché in their country (to gain a better understand of what should be used when communicating internationally) More generally, what would be different or not applicable to professional writing in your country as opposed to the US (if you know?)

Just looking for some things that could be slip ups when conducting business internationally. Thanks guys! hope you don't mind, the people I know in other countries are sleeping right now

          Good Old Blighty here. (England).

Do these cliches have to be business related?

for sake of my assignment, yes. for sake of this conversation, no

im lookin for things you might say to someone of another country that might be fine in the US but might offend (or go over the heads) of pepople in other countries

HSBC ran a bunch of ads a couple years back with those clichés outlined... see if u can find them they were pretty interesting (they ran 'em in Canada...)

              example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_WAmt3cMdk

                    Are you mocking me?

There are a ton of Canadian cliches, I can personally claim the "eh", I do use that a lot, but I don't say "a-boot" and I don't like beer
I can't think of anything that would offend us that Americans could inadvertently say/do. Annoy? Yes , but I don't think we are so different that it would cause social faux pas.

                      Certainly not!

I've been trying to think of common phrases that would offend, I'm having a hard time. But my brain is on vacation.

                        Yay vacation brain!

Ya, I think Canadians find the stereotypes more amusing then anything. Michael Moore really played them up in his films, it's not as great here as he wants you to believe. Our health care system, while "free" is pretty sucky and every day more and more things aren't covered, and when I was growing up just outside of Toronto we always locked our doors, whether we were home or not.

Oh ya, hockey really is huge here, I don't get it, but I don't get beer either.
I totally should have been born on a rum soaked island somewhere

Kinda reversed, but... In the UK you can ask someone for a fag (cigarette). but don't ask someone in the US for a puff of their fag!

Then you probably wouldnt fit in in the US either. Head down to Jamaica or something. They should have enough rum for you...

Unfortunately I don't have access to any other programs, gah. Question about crop marks...are they necessary? This may sound like a silly question, but for the invitations, the design itself is very simple...
