I need some help to get rid of these icons... i must have pressed some short cut. Not sure.

It's your non-printing characters (paragraph breaks, etc.)

On the Mac it's the highlighted icon. I'm not sure where it is on the PC.

Hierarchy needs attention. The focus of the poster should be on what you want your reader to do. You have less than 3 seconds to get the average reader's attention and get your point across.
