  • Wireless Network

    #1
I should be getting DSL within the next couple of months, but I am trying to decide between the wired and wireless network. ATM, wireless is looking the best, because I don't feel like running all that cable and setting up outlets.

I have some questions for any of you that may have experience with this:

    1. Have you had problems with interference/dropped signal with wireless?
    2. Is 802.11g a must, or will 802.11b suffice (it's much cheaper)?
    3. Will different brands work together? i.e. A Linksys router and D-Link cards.

    Thanks!

I live in a 2story old home and my wireless router is in my basement. It is a Belkin 802.11g and it only cost me $90 at comp usa.
I have the 17in powerbook with built in wireless. I am in my bed as we speak on the second floor and the signal is great! I have not had a dropped signal yet.

Wires suck, even my mouse is wireless... its the only way to go.

In my opinion, wireless is the way to go. I have a Mac G5 with built-in blue tooth technology and it works really well.

We have guys here who drive around town with their wireless notebooks looking for open air so they don't have to pay for service. It's amazing how many they find.

Thanks guys. I will probably be getting wireless. I talked to my dad and neither him nor I want to set up the wires. The computers aren't far apart (about 32 ft with a few walls in between), so I think I'll go with 802.11b. I have been seeing really good deals on it.

As for security, I will make sure it's closed. Change default channel and password and set up the MAC filter.

Wireless is great, especialy if you have a laptop (it would be nice if you could transfer power wirelessly).

I have 5 computers connected, both through wires and wirelessly, and am using 3 different brands of wireless devices. For internet, you wont notice a difference between b and g, but for file tranfers and prints you might.

If all your computers support it, put WEP encryption on all your devices, and make the key a really hard to guess 128 bit one (not like f0f0f0f0f0f0f0, but like 12f9a73de... (they are in hex). Also, put MAC address filtering on your router so only computers that you configure are allowed on the network.

I recomed D-Link routers, as the configuration panel (via Http) seems easier to use. Linksys is also good.

if someone is stealing your signal....whats the big deal...?

I am thinking it would just slow your connection right?

If they are stealing your signal, they are also able to access any files on your computer.
