Wouldn't it be fun if Facebook just vanished?
<Maybe taking Twitter with it. >
I heard a report on the NPR yesterday about stores doing away with cash registers and doing transactions using mobile devices. Yeah, good luck with that. I have better places to spend my CASH.
Yeah, now I have to jump through hoops in some places just to pay with a check. I don't have a debit card or cell phone or other "mobile device," do you want my money or not?

It seems you almost have to answer a short survey before they accept your money anywhere these days...
"What's your post code? what's your email? would you like to sign up for a store card? What's your mother's bestfirend's favourite food?"

NO! I just want to pay for this item and leave.
That's why I stopped going to Radio Shack. When I picked up my digital TV converters the sales guy said he was "required by the government" to get my ZIP Code. I found out later that was a blatant lie.

For a while I was just telling them I was of no fixed address or I'd give them my plate number, when they realized it wasn't a post code, I'd tell them I live in a van down by the river.

Well, I'm sure they get more info than ever off my credit card swipe, so it just annoys the pancake out of me that they still ask for it. I just shop elsewhere.
I haven't been in a Radio Shack for years, but they used to be REALLY pushy about wanting your phone number. I finally had to interrupt one clerk and just say "Are you actually telling me that this store won't sell me anything if I don't give you my phone number?"
After that he went ahead and processed the transaction. I was mad enough I wouldn't have bought it at all except it was just $2 cable adapter I'd have had to order online otherwise and I didn't want to wait.
When they ask for a phone number, I politely decline. Never had an issue (and honestly I haven't had anyone ask for a phone number in a long time). My plan if someone does ask and gets pushy is to give a fake number. And then once my bag and receipt are in hand, I let them know, "By the way, that number was fake."
It was during the great digital conversion, and (if you remember) we all got two coupons for a huge reduction in the cost of the converter devices, so it was almost plausible.
And I think I've been saying ZIP Code when I mean phone number, although maybe they ask for both.
