    We thought it would be a good idea to start gathering the RIPs in one thread. We start tonight with the death of actor Ben Gazzara.

    Ben Gazzara, an intense actor whose long career included playing Brick in the original “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” on Broadway, roles in influential films by John Cassavetes and work with several generations of top Hollywood directors, died on Friday afternoon in Manhattan. He was 81.

    He died of pancreatic cancer at Bellevue Hospital Center, his lawyer, Jay Julien, said. Mr. Gazzara lived in Manhattan.

      81... dies of Cancer not a bad run compared to others with the disease.
      He did a great rendition as a Porno tycoon along with Jeff bridges in the Big Lebowski!

          It is a shame. I need to qualify this with the fact that as a singer, I hated, loathed Houston. I'm sorry if that sounds disrespectful, but no matter what I thought of her music, 48 is too young. She certainly got the brunt of all that celebrity can dish out. It's a pity.

            I get it Nobert. I loved "I wanna dance with somebody" for the energy, but I have always preferred Dolly Parton's "I will always love you."

                  Yeah I saw that last night, we were at dinner and my friend was checking facebook for something else that we were talking about and it was in someone feed. Totally shocked about that one...

                    Apparently Whitney's 18 year old daughter was admitted to the hospital with "undisclosed symptoms".

                      Really?

                      I was never a fan of that type of music, but I always thought she was (at least in her prime) tremendously likable.

                      She seemed to have a universal appeal, and for that late '80s early '90s she was THE American singer with no real peer.
                      Her appeal really transcended race. She became what I think as being the very first black "all-American girl next door" in a way.
                      She had the great voice, but she also had tremendous artistic sensibilities Where subsequent Divas tend to lay the melisma on way too thick, she would pick her spots much more dramatically. Same with all the vocal techniques, she was more careful not to overdo them.

                      The Superbowl national anthem performance* was like a moment in history and you KNEW it was when you watched it.





                      * It WAS lip synched, but it was still a remarkable rendition.

                        Matter of taste, I suppose. I am slightly allergic to mellisma.

                        What seems more significant is that she quickly became go-to material for the tabloids and celebrity rags once she hit the A-list roller-coaster of personal problems. I can't imagine having to live like that. Whether said issues had anything to do with her untimely demise, I don't know, but being chewed up by fame is getting to be as much a statistical norm as being trapped by poverty.

                          Well, she probably did set the table on that.

                          Though I think Stevie Wonder's later stuff was the real culprit.
                          I do thing she was much more careful in how she handled various techniques than any of the divas that came later.

                                The problem you're facing is one I face all the time. The easiest solution is to create a clipping path in photoshop. You haven't missed any steps, it all starts because transparencies and spot colours...
