  • BOO HOO - at least u have a job

    #1
I'm sure when I finally find a job in the field I will find stuff to bitch about as well.
However, I'm working at a bank data processing on the same screen for 8 or more hours and when there's no work I get to stuff envelopes or shred paper.
I'm really f'n glad a bachelor's degree and hard work get you places.

Yup, understood. I've got a degree and 5 years experience, and my primary job responsibility is answering phones.

Tell you what, though... design jobs aren't all peachy either. You don't have to LOOK for stuff to bitch about... trust me!

I haven't lost my mind... it's backed up on disk somewhere.

I often joke to my friend that the day I score something worthwhile, I'll probably be griping about that too after three or four years.

As much crap and boredom I have to put up with at the current job, I try and look at it this way. If I can deal with that, then I can deal with anything

In graphic design it's useless. Experience, know-how and a solid portfolio is worth 10X a BA, or Masters, and it's a fraction of the cost, in fact the time you spend getting a degree you can get 4-7 years of real world expereince AND make money at the same time.

It's funny these days, when I got out of school, all that employers seemed to want was experience (and understandably so). Over the past year I've been hunting, they don't want to talk to you if you don't have some sort of associates or bachelors (regardless of actual experience), it sucks.

what Manus said idaho.. in a nutshell. I have a BA in GD and if I could do it all over again I would have interned or job shadowed right out of HS.

Trnowicki, I hear ya on the diploma basically being a fancy piece of asswipe paper. I didn't really know until I got my associates that I wanted to go into design,so when I decided tomove away from I.T it was like "you're already in college, might as well finish off two more years..." and in those two years I've netted nearly $30,000 in loans, rather than then $1,200 from my community college...oh yeah, and no graphics job. After graduating last May I'm still working at the same retail store that I started at my freshman year (I recently got promoted to "Electronics Specialist" and went from $7.50 to $8.95...whoopdy pancakeing doo after 4+ years). The furthest I've gotten wasa second interview at a local print shop, and lost it to a current senior from the same college I graduated from because she had an internship and I didn't (pancakeers).

I wish I had a graphics job during the holiday, because this last holiday season was the worst one ever...understaffed in electronics despite having the second highest sales the day after thanksgiving in the ENTIRE pancakeING COMPANY, overworked, and too many shoppers who wig-out...I was seriously having frickin' nightmares about that place and losing sleep and gained some weight due to depressive symptoms. Seriously,I think retail workers are treated like sh!tbecause of this "customers arealways right" bullsh!t that isso far from the truth, andbecause some customers honestly find nothing better to do than harass us and need to go to the manager when we outwit them in a battle of "they'll be mean, I'll be extra-nice."And on top of that we get all of these reallypancakeing hot girls who work there but they're just a shade too young so you're tryingnot to walk around with a solid hard on all day (don't ask where that came from). I would rather forcefeed my weiner (WHAT? "WEINER"!?! magnus said it, come on!) into a woodchipper than work another holiday season at any retail establishment.

                            I hate snow.

wow...weird how one way or another someone says something that is a reflection of things I've been through. I personally think that experience is worth a lot more than a degree in the design field. I couldnt get a job worth anything after I graduated and I was doing direct mail because I had experience in it with part time jobs in the past. Now, just because i knew some people in the right places, I'm starting year 2 of my job as a designer at my company, which also does direct mail. Good thing I had some experience in something I guess. Now I just want to get as much experience as possible.
