Hi Eann and welcome to GDF.

We ask all new members to read very important links here and here. These explain the rules, how the forum runs and a few inside jokes. No, you haven't done anything...

Yeah, it's too bad new designers don't know them.

You shouldn't be looking on google images... at least not without expecting to pursue permission to use the images. Google images is NOT a stock site, though some stock shows up in it.

Very strange. You want someone to tell you how to set up a site so YOU will benefit?
The Graphic Design part sounds like it will be very important to the success of your site.

  • Clicking on someone's link that they posted on Facebook can lead to this

I don't want that App annoying the bejebus out of me while I'm facebooking.

    Solution?

Copy the name of the video you want to watch

    Then google it

    Then enjoy it on youtube

    Stupid facebook apps

    • Oh my gosh I hate facebook apps. I do the same thing hank. You can't click on an article or a video anymore without it being connected to a ridiculous app. I hate how facebook is connected to EVERYTHING.

      • What I hate about it is that App keeps nagging you. Plus it's probably doing some background data collection to target adverts at you.

There isn't a day goes by that I have to block an App on facebook - it's ridiculous. And really destroys the experience, well compared to how it was when Facebook was launched. They were simpler times.

        • If you click/agree to one of those apps it will tell everyone everything you watch. So don't watch anything that might come back and embarrass you.

I gave up on Facebook awhile ago. It's impossible to keep your stuff secure. No matter how careful you are with the security settings they change them every few weeks and set em all back to 0, they call this a "feature".

          • A friend of mine called the police yesterday because of a threatening/vulgar comment made on one of her photos from the fall. She claims she has her security setting to only allow friends to comment, but this guy isn't among her friends. She blocked him, but when the police came (who literally put the blame on her because she was pretty and putting pics on FB for all to see ) she had to unblock him in order for them to see who he might be (using a fake name). Now she can't block him again for 48 hours because of some FB rule.

I only post very limited things on there. And nothing that will embarrass me.

It's actually get a bit sleazy. Nearly on the verge of giving up on the thing myself.

It used be a nice way to socialise with your friends. Now I have to block 52 different Farmville invites despite how many times I block it. Next time I'm marking it as spam.

Of course it is. The only difference between sites like FB and Google is that they do it so blatantly that it's obvious they're doing it. I'm sure most things we use online collect the same type of data and use it to target ads and whatnot at you. Even if a post here goes off topic long enough, I start seeing ads along the side of this site for shoes, products, what have you.

We are consumers, and sellers will use any means to get us to buy their product. I've even started seeing it creep into Pinterest now. Pins of products where the description is a buy me buy me line. I was surprised it took so long.

                • Whenever I'm working on translation projects for our mega-huge cosmetics client, I get ads from them when I go surf the internet. I do one search to clarify whether a particular phrase is part of a product name or just a description and the ads start popping up like I was looking to buy their products. It's frustrating because I'll go surf to take a break from lipsticks and skincare, only to have the client's ads right in my face.

                  Gotta love AdBlock.

One of my friends had to use a cane for awhile. I don't know where she got it, but it was purple anodized aluminum. Someone had taken a small grinder, maybe a dremel or some other kind of engraver, and made a pattern all over it. Everywhere they cut through the anodized coating was shiny silver. It was pretty cool.

Would that take care of that? Is that info stored in the browser? Or does Google know you by IP and whatever pings back about the computer and/or its user?

No worries anyway, I have AdBlock installed and working again. I had to disable it at one point because it was causing issues (here I believe).

It didn't cost that much back in the 80s when I got it.
