  • How to deal with fussy clients

    #1
Hey everyone, I haven't posted in a while but that's okay because my graphic design side job is finally starting to pick up business so I'm pretty busy.

So anyways, I have one permanent client from Europe that has become increasingly fussy over time. I do 'bulk' photo editing for their real estate firm and things started off great and they loved my work. It's been about 5 months now and they are starting to pick on little things that they would like done on photos after I send them a large amount of photos (40-50 at a time) back in a zip file, even though I haven't changed my techniques or anything, so a lot of the time I end up doing about 5-10% of the work over again for nothing because they weren't "happy" with the first run.

Things that they will complain about are typically the sky or water is not the 'perfect' shade of blue or the trees are not the right green. Basically what I try to do and what my North American clients like is to enhance the photos but leaving them still natural looking, so I basically just enhance what's already in the picture and fill in some of the blown highlights.

What these clients want, though, is to completely change their photos into something that looks very fake by pretty much super saturating them. I'm fine with doing that if that's what they want, but I feel like they are basically looking for a reason to get rid of me for some reason without saying it outright.

I get a lot of contradictory emails that give me instructions that oppose what they've said to always do in the past. For instance, I got dumped on yesterday by the manager for sending pictures to all of the agents instead of only to her, when in the past I have always sent pictures to all of the agents which was her original request.

Any ideas on how to deal with this? I usually only talk to the manager and the rest of them seem very friendly when I do talk to them. If I had a lot of other clients I wouldn't think twice about dropping this one because they were my first permanent ones and thus are not paying as much as I am charging now (rookie mistake).

Are you charging hourly? If you have a set rate for doing so many photos, regardless of time, then they may feel like taking advantage of you to make a myriad of annoying and possibly inconsequential revisions. Maybe if they see how much extra time it's taking when factored into the invoice, they may clam up.

But otherwise, it sounds like from some of the things you said that you should probably start looking for other clients, rather than becoming too dependent on this one.

Sounds like one or two ladies are just being picky and after all it doesn't cost that much. I don't think they are trying to dump you, just taking advantage maybe. It happens often and to most people.

Thanks for the advice, it's much appreciated. I should be charging them hourly now that they are coming up with these things. I charged them per photo for the first couple of projects after I calculated my hourly rate into them and was quite happy to continue that way. But obviously my hourly rate is going down if I'm doing re-work.

How would you go about switching them over to an hourly rate. Keep in mind that these are people who think that they can get anything done for nothing through GAF, at least that's the impression I get.

I just thought they were kind of trying to get rid of me or give me some sort of warning with the last two emails the first of which said they were not happy AT ALL with the photos and the second email that read:

"The sharpening is much better now, but the green mountains are too green and
much to dark, the sky and sea is fine. I just want this to be good so we can
have a good long working relationship.

VERY IMPORTANT for the future always end the pictures only back to me!! Not to the others"

This comes after the original instructions back in November that I should always send all pictures back to all agents, then in February send them only to her, then March they were behind schedule because I hadn't sent pictures out to all the agents... and on and on. Frustrating.

Send them all an email to her and the brokers and let them know what the problem is. Tell that you are confused as to whether you are suppose to be sending the photos to her only or to everyone. Ask them if they could please discuss it on their end and then let you know how they would like to do it. Explain that you want to offer good customer service but it becomes more difficult when they contradict your original instructions. Word things very politely and professionaly.

Work with the customer to develop a specific look for all sky, water, and grass areas in the photos. Come up with a specific formula that you apply to each photos (i.e. if the photo is taken in the sunlight you brighten it by 10%, all sky areas have more blue added using Photshops variations, etc...)

The more you can standardize things the better. I've been in your exact shoes working with real estate brokers before and I know that they can be picky bitches.

Oh my god, that statement just reminded me of one of my worst clients back at my print shop job. I hadn't thought about that woman in years.....

            ...thanks a lot.

No problem Patrick, always happy to bring back good old memories in a round-about way! No need to thank me!

Idaho I think I will send an email along the lines of your suggestion, that sounds like my best option right now. Thanks again!

I have found that most realtors are the worst people to work with and they always balk at prices, I think if you told these people it was free they would find something wrong with the price.

They have/want some of the worst concepts for advertising as well. My client previously mentioned always dressed up like the wicked witch from the Wizard of Oz (god...sooo many jokes about that back then) and featured her poodle.

Movie theatre billboard ads before the movie are also bad, one of the worst ads was a realtor in a karate outfit alongside her kids (I guess they were the ones in karate class) saying she was a black belt in real estate or whatever.

If I was looking for a home, I don't give a damn about your kids lady...I give a damn about what you can do that the other realtors can't. Like coming up with a good marketing concept.

Send them a letter advising that since the workload has changed over the time you have worked for them that you will be switching to hourly rate. I mean really, they shouldn't mind too much. These people aren't paying you out of their own pocket, it's company money right?

Hourly rate means that you don't get screwed with clients like this.

I also work with realtors and yes, they are very picky and will try to get something for as cheap as possible. I have set rates for all the work I do for my realtor client, it's agreed upon and they always come back 5 or 6 months later and want to renegotiate. Of course, it's a rate that's cheaper for them. I have to be smarter than them in the long run and make sure I'm not getting the short end of the stick. I have actually "fired" this client once and they came back a few months later and agreed to my terms!

I can't stop laughing, I love it...god I gotta remember that... the next time I want to hang up on a telemarketer or someone I don't like...

Hey now give me a catchy one for door to door salesmen or the likes...

My advice would be to set a standard rate on each image as you already have then give them a buffer of "free" revisions they have like maybe 5 free revisions you can set this to what you want. Then per additional charge them an hourly rate that is reasonably (reasonable for YOU not the cheap asses) If they can't come to terms with this or feel you are too pricey my advice would be to move on.
