  • Am I a reseller of print media as a freelance designer?

    So I've worked as a graphic designer for almost 2 years at a printshop and I want more creative projects so I've decided to do freelance on the side and hope that I can gain a little momentum and then be able to quit my job and operate entirely on my own.

    Now I have a few clients and I have a new order for business cards. To give my client the best price I have to be a certified reseller. Here is a quote from 4over.com's website (I've dealt with them at my regular job so I know what their pricing is like and the quality of the product).

    "Please complete this online form to intiate your application to become a 4 Over trade client and receive access to exclusive trade member pricing.
    Once your application has been reviewed and certified that your business is a certified reseller of print media products or that you represent a related industry service provider, you will be notified via email that your account is created."

    So my big question is, am I a certified reseller? Who does the certifiing anyway? Is it up to each trade printer? Or is there something legally that I specifically need; tax ID?

    Usually it means you have to have a federal tax number. Trade member pricing doesn't include any taxes so you are responsible for charging and collecting any sales tax from the end buyer.

      Yes, you are a reseller.

      You designed the BC for the client for X dollars. (this is service oriented on its own and would not require tax IDs or the collection of taxes)

      4over is selling you the BC for Y dollars.

      you are then *reselling* 4over's cards to your client for Z dollars which is including some kind of mark up.


      So, 4over needs your ID number to cover their butt when the government asks why they didn't charge you tax. Now, big brother comes knocking at your door looking for their money.
