  • Help With My Company Name

    #1
I'm a graphic and web designer. I've been out of university for a yer and taking on lots of projects for all kinds of clients and businesses.

When I started out, my business name was 'Jack O'Donoghue' which is my name. I positioned myself as a company as I want to evolve fairly quick. I was concerned that the name was too long and people couldn't spell it.

I changed to 'Geometry Creative' this January and am still using this name. I'm not too sure of it now and I have had thoughts of returning to 'Jack O'Donoghue' but am worried that again its too long and not very memorable.

What do you guys think? Do you think I could eventually employee people and have this as my company name too?

    Geometry Creative?
    Jack O'Donoghue?

    Thanks for your time.

Is the name working for you?

Are you getting the type of clients you want?

Are you becoming too busy to complete all the work on time all by your onesie?

If you answered yes too all of these questions than no need to confuse people. If you answered no to either of the first two questions than a change may be warranted.

I do have quite a bit of work on but I'm trying to take it further so that I can start to work with other designers and developers.

I'm thinking of re-branding Geometry Creative but having it orientated around me so its clear that its my portfolio, this will hopefully give me the option to expand when I'm ready

2 or 3 syllables is ideal for a company name provided it has a great impact to the nature of what services your company has to offer.

Jack, I would vote for Geometry Creative, first, I think this is much easier for people to remember; second it is not so good if you change the company's name on the condition that you have got some clients already.

Maybe it's just me, but "geometry" just makes me think of basic shapes and grade school. Not really the best connotations for a design company IMHO

On a similar note, "Geometry Creative" sounds more like a firm that designs educational tools for geometry teachers/classes.

On the flip side, I think the basic and simple connotation could be good, if basic and simple (and efficient) is how the business is branded.

Jack, is it too late to make a simple change to "Geometry Creative"? It's a good start, but kem isn't too far off by saying it's got some connotation issues. You could play it basic and simple, like I said, but it still sounds weird. It sounds like a random pairing of words. So my suggestion is maybe change it to "Geometric Creative." At least that way, you build more of a relationship between your words with one word modifying the other. You could also use that new adjective to describe both your work and the brand. "It's geometric!" Or, if you're an Adventure Time fan, "GEOMETRIC!!!" Also, I don't think geometric has as many confusing/weird connotations as geometry. In other words, "Geometric Creative" sounds kinda cool. "Geometry Creative" sounds nerdy in a bad, anti-zeitgeist way.

                    Creative Jack O'

Changing your bussines name regularly is not the best strategy. It gives a message that your making fresh starts over and over again. It promotes an unstable image for your bussines. But thats my personal oppinion.

                    Good luck anws

I would go with Jack O' Design.

Your logo could be a jack-o-lantern.
