    Welcome Alvarez!

When you get settled please read this as well as these very important threads. They will give you all the info you need on how the forum runs, the rules and regs, and give you some background info on our long running, inside jokes

what does your contract say about who owns the file? i would provide a vector version (ai and pdf), jpg on white and dark background, and any alternate versions that they requested. again that should all be written out in your contract and be agreed upon before you start.

        Welcome.

As mentioned, this should already be stated in your contract. In my experience, if you get paid to create a logo, the person buying it owns it, that includes copyright. My opinion.

Generally, once you get paid, the client owns all rights to the logo. As for what files to include, I usually give the following:

            .ai
            .pdf
            .eps
            .png

I also give a full color version, a one color (black logo on white background), a stacked version, a horizontal version CMYK versions, RGB versions.

I also give brand guidelines that include Pantone colors that were used, fonts, CMYK/RGB values, etc.

There's a lot of posts on this, as I understand it (which is not saying much) you own the logo and the client owns the rights to reproduce it unless otherwise specified in the contract.
(I wouldn't necessarily do anything with that unless they decide to sell it for zillions, although I did tell a client that was jerking me around and wanted the native files that they only owned the repro rights. End of that client.)

I give a B&W and color version in CMYK and RGB along with assorted sizes of jpgs, pdfs, pngs, an ai & eps and (if asked) any color variations they might want.
I assume they know diddley about what they are doing but want to be able to grab something for their fb page or email sig, or to send to their printer without having to call me, so they get it all nicely packaged in assorted folders.

But I kind of do the overkill thing.

do any of you guys have an example of the files you send to your clients? and as far as the whole copyright issue, where do you guys copyright it?

What exactly do you mean 'an example of the files you send to your clients'? Most designers will send a vector file, first and foremost. Generally in .eps format. Most will also include a few in other formats that they may need such as .tifs and .jpgs, as well as separate versions in black and white, grayscale, spot color, 4-color process and rgb.

Your client is the one responsible for officially getting the logo copyrighted.

And the fact that you're working without a contract is pretty scary. Like horror-movie scary. This is where things like who owns the copyright would have been spelled out already.

If you're really serious about doing freelance, buy a copy of the GAG Handbook - Pricing and Ethical Guidelines. They put out a new edition every year. It covers pricing, contracts, trademarks, copyright, etc.

On a logo, you don't keep the copyright and allow reproductions.
A logo gets registered as a trademark and belongs to the business that contracted it.
If I owned a business, there's no way someone else is going to hold any claim to my business identity.

Why am I imagining a glitzy Photoshop logo?
