  • Help with graphic design rates for magazines...Again.

    #1
Okay, I have this possible client who wants me to do all the graphic design and layout for her small 28-page magazine. Mind you, she doesn't have a big budget.

How much should I charge and how? A flat fee for the whole mag? An hourly rate? I have no idea...At least some starting point for both money and billing method will be very helpful.

    Thanks!

I would figure out how long you think the job is going to take you and then decided whether you should charge and hourly or a flat rate. 28 pages isn't bad at all......as long as they get the copy to you like they should. What kind of magazine is this and what will they be supplying for you?

I'm in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Usual rates are between $45 and $85 per hour...But I dunno if they can even take the $45-per hour rate...

It is a tourism magazine, in Spanish and English. The editor will give me the copy ready to include in the pages, and about 90% of the pictures, so I would strictly do the graphic design and layout.

So you have to do 2 (an English version and a Spanish version)? I would decide how long you think this will take you. I mean even if you have to do the 2 versions...when you reflow the new copy in the other language, you will still have to adjust each story to make it fit right, even tho your images will already be in place, and the layout basically done. Does that make sense? I also do a Spanish paper and when the stories are translated they usually run a little bit longer than the English version.

            Yeah, Spanish is 'wordier'.

It's not that the whole magazine is done in both languages. What they do is put the articles one right next to the other, first Spanish, then English. I personally don't like that approach, it's redundant and cumbersome. I have a better idea...I hope they'll bite.

Since they give me all the text, I think ti shouldn't take far too much time (maybe a week), but I don't wanna shoot myself in the foot.

            Decisions, decisions...!

Do you approx how many pages it is or usually is? This will help you determine the time frame as well.

Ewwee yeah one column in English with the Spanish right next to it? Yuck yeah I know what you mean about not liking that idea. What is your approach that you are working on getting them to do?

No I don't think it would take you too much time. I do a 40 page Spanish one in 1 1/2 - 2 days. Would take LESS time if I got the copy in the time I was suppose to! But you know how ppl are...LOL! I would probobly go with a flat rate on this...but limit your revisions with them, otherwise you will be revising and making changes up until you send to the press...to the minute..ugh..! LOL! Good luck!
