i am considering a career change into graphic design. i have a background as a self employed stringed instrument maker but due to a serious illness a couple of years ago my business folded and i am now wanting to do something new. i have beenusing photoshop for almost 10 years as a hobby and am confident in my technical skills, as well as dreamweaver and3d nurbs modelling and still image rendering in maya.
my question is..by the time i finish the graphic designprogram i am looking at i will be pushing 40 (it is a full time 2 year program which i will take part time over 4 years) i am 35 now. would a potential employer consider taking on someone of this age or are they all looking for young hip fresh designers? i am hoping my career as a stringed instrument maker may help some...it did involve inlays, colour schemes, communication with clients, and industrial design skills. so istalent and a strong portfolio enough or will i look like a fool applying for junior design jobs at this age?thanks in advance for your honesty!

you do run a risk... but it's not impossible. As said in a TON of other posts for newbies in the industry it all boils down to one thing... PORTFOLIO. you need a strong one, nothing else matters to these employers.... NOTHING. Good luck.

Hi mberg, welcome to the forum. I agree with Defjoe, experience is king when a job. If you use the next two years to take on any jobs in the industry that you can get, as well as your school. You shouldn't find age a barrier later on.

And GD is a field where you can freelance easily. If you've run your own business before, even this option won't be so daunting. If you have a kick-ass portfolio people will see your age as experience. No need to disillusion them.

Good luck!

Hey - you have the self-employed part down...just add a great portfolio and work for yourself.

If you decide to do print work, consider working at a printer to learn everything you thought you knew. It is an eyeopener.

Then go for it. Constantly re-evaluate your portfolio so you can add or subtract and strengthen in areas of design you want to target as your market.
