  • Where do I start? Need to clean up font mess!

    #1
Our server at work is a complete disaster. We have fonts all over the place. I think there is a copy of our fonts folder in 5 different places, along with on everyone's desktops seperately. It's just causing too many problems. I haven't dealt too much with font management, so I'm wondering a few things:

    Your opinions?

    1. Best font software for Mac?
    2. Pull fonts from HD or server (we have 4 users using the same fonts)?
    3. How do I start to organize?

I appreciate any help and advice anyone has!

    Thank you!

Ahhh the old font issue. what a pain. I know what you are going through. I take it that you are all on a network and have fonts everywhere! first you have to tell everyone else to go home and you have to go through each machine. Take off all fonts and make one font folder. I have mine set up in order A, B, C..... then in those folders I have individual folders for each font. Get ride of the duplicates. After all is nice and neat you can make a copy onto each harddrive cause sharing fonts over the network is BAD! Make swure if someone needs a font that don't have to COPY it and not link it from that harddrive. Will cause havoc!

As far as software goes, Mc has a fontbook program that comes with Panther but for you it might be good to get Suitcase. It is an industry standard and very easy to use and organize.

We have Suitcase X1. So at least we have that much...

What do you mean about not copying fonts and and linking from the hard drive? Generally, the way we would do it is have a folder on our network mostly for a reference folder. Because it's a good place to keep a sort of 'archive' of all of our fonts. Then we make a copy of that and pull it onto each individual hard drive (desktop) - and when adding fonts into suitcase, we pull from the font list on our hard drives, not our server.

Is it okay to copy the fonts from ther server to our hard drive?

YES...that is what I mean. you DON'T want to add fonts to suitcase from that server. that creates problems.

Not to drag this on, but what kind of problems does it cause? Is it just mostly suitcase reading duplicate fonts or something?

I guess I'm just thirsting for knowledge...

nope it can cause your whole system to lock up. say you add a font that is on your co workers HD and he/she reboots your suitcase wil lact up and you will start having issues. It's always a slow mover too. Things start getting funky first with the program your in and then things start happening to the OS. It's not a fun thing at all.

Interesting. I've always thought our font mess was the root of all of our problems we have. I guess that would be a prime place to start, eh?

Yes, random crashes, distiller and printing errors, weird OS errors, program errors... weird stuff like that. Actually our corporate font just got totally revamped and our company actually purchased an opentype font that we consistently use now. All of our flyers and catalogs that are updated to the new font don't really give us many problems now.

I could go off on the whole subject of how I've been saying for years that these things need to be done, but the uppers need to hear it from someone outside the company for it to sink it. My 4-year degree means nothing to these people, and it really ticks me off. $25,000 of loans later... AAARRRGGG!!

I need a new job. (Sorry - you'll probably hear that rant in all my posts until I get outta here...)
In fact, maybe I'll make it my signature!!
