  • creating a cinema graphic

    A new trend in online publishing are cinema graphics.

    You have a still photograph with some moving elements to create attention.

    a few examples

    Somebody wants to do this in Photoshop, but I don't think that's the best software to do this.

    Any suggestions on other software options?

    I only associate those static photos with waving arms to cheap, ronko-quality crap and spam ads.
    They appear to be just simple gifs, Photoshop is fine for that.

      Flixel I've only used this as a demo, and more just out of curiosity. It's also (I believe) Mac only. But it does what you're describing.

      However, you probably could pull it off in Photoshop or possibly even something like Premiere. It would probably just be a matter of figuring out the best ways to pull it off an sticking to that process.

        I did a quick search on youtube for make a cinemagraph in premiere and there were quite a few examples and youtube also has a few examples on doing one in Photoshop as well. To me, if you're creating one, plan up front rather than taking a video and then figuring out what you want to "subtly" animate.

          Is After Effects an alternative for more complex combinations, like a falling leave from a tree?

              It is quite impossible to cut a stack of paper exactly on the trim marks. Apart from the accuracy of the cut, which can be problematic, there are other factors;

              This is how I do it too - take a few quick photos of interesting surfaces while you're out and about and then play around with them in PhotoShop. Once you've done a few like this you get a better idea...

              Good point, but in my opinion it's distracting in a portfolio and lacks attention to detail when displaying work.

              Ha, I noticed the printing and registration marks and thought it refreshing to see a designer who knows to include them....
