  • cardboard pop-ups and engineering

    #1
I'm interested in creating some of those elastic powered pop ups you see from time to time which come flatpacked in an envelope and then pop up to be a 3d shape... I know there are specific cardboard engineers which do these for you but what if you want a very short run and want to create your own? are there plans available for some general shapes or are they all a closely guarded secret of the industry?

If I understanding you correctly, I don't think the things you're reffering to ar elastic powered. they're just heavy cardstock with folds and glue. They're easyenough to make, but I think the design is patented/copywritten or something, and you have to go through the proper channels to use it. I have no idea what those channels are, sorry.

I've been trying to get hold of one or two and then reverse-engineer them but i can't get any

          reverse-engineer...
          Patent infringement...
          Difference?

For small numbers you may have to find someone that actually makes them and run them at 'prototype' rate. Sounds like an 'offshore' product type thing. I've been running into a lot of that lately with some marketing whizgigs the museum types want.
