I think most of the affect is from artifacts in the .jpg file that was uploaded?? If not try using the alien skin, rust feature to achive something pretty similar, you could also add a layer of "noise" and then remove the white and then wind,blur and liquify.adjust transparancy.. that would be my guess..

yeah, pretty bad quality. i couldn't get a clearer one to upload. the best way i can describe it is that the model and almost everything have really hard edges, but they're very shiny. the photo itself feels slightly retro but also slightly painted. it seems to have an almost shiny glow to it.

does any of that help?

looking at it.. and based on the "Content" of it.. 70's basically before computers.. It was probably a photograph ? that someone hand touched up or a really good painting.. look at the scissors and the shoe boxes on the ground.. It has good elements in it.. The woman looks pretty good also.. If you have Photoshop CS2 try going thru the filter library and see what works to achieve this. You might also have to adjust exposure and etc.. I would experiment and see what happens.. But.. It could have been a painting to begin with.. ??? Any other thoughts?

the thing that makes this a nifty effect? this is a current discover card ad. brand new. i've seen this effect before on black and white photos in my wife's vogue magazines. yup, i'm the geek that looks at the ads for the techniques and not the clothes...

I think you're right, PD. It looks like a painting to me, and a very nice one, too. I would buy that.

Of course, who can really tell with all the Jpeg artifacting going on?

We'll I'llBE... ummm when you find out .. make sure and let me know thats pretty cool....
There might be a filter or tool especially for that.. check out the adobe exchange and see if there is something on there for that.. best guess...

right. sorry about that. i'm still a noob as far as posting images. and actually, i kind would rather figure it out on my own, which is what i've been trying to do for the past few days. i've been at this long enough to know there never is an easy button. i'm just running up against a deadline and thought i might jump ahead.

that's what i get for cheatin'...

it may in fact be painted. i guess i'm just jaded enough in this modern world of altered images to think that everything is digital anymore. maybe i'll just try to airbrush what i'm working on and see.

When you've been in this industry long enough, you can usually look at the texture and detail of an illustration, and tell if it was an original creation, or a digital modification. That goes for paintings as well as photo-realistic vector art.

My professional opinion is that this is most likely a painting, though PD is the one who prompted me to look at it that close..
