  • Mock ups and Portfolio

    #1
I have as part of my portfolio 'mock ups' of finished items such as cosmetic bottles and jars and tubes with all the labeling I did along with labels for a sub brand on towels and lifestlye accessories. I also have a 300 page holiday cottage brochure (the real printed version that took all my summer 10 weeks 2004 as a work plcement in my 2nd year at uni) and a couple of book designs made up into dummy books. Pamphlets and leaflets etc.

I have up 'til now just had the bottles and jars etc in a bag and just taken them along to interview to show as they look much better than just flat printed labels in my portfolio or page spreads etc. and the books shoved in the pockets each end of the standard black folio case.

I have some leaflets and pamphlets loose in a clear plastic A4 insert (in A3 folder) so they can be got out and handled as well as printed flats on A3 grey card in plastic sleeves. Also documents that describe the design process I went through and work books/thought process sheets? I have had portfolio reviews and some have said it would be interesting to see how I arrived at what I did, others aren't interested, How do you know?

I just wondered and would like to hear what anyone else does with 'items'.
I'm asking 'cos I have an interview on Tuesday the 4th one in 15 months after sending loads of applications off with zilch response. A little nervous is the understatement

Take really good photographs of all your objects so they can go into the portfolio and you're not carrying around a bag of objects.

I have never taken process work with me to job interviews - only my best and finished work.

I would have only 1 folder of work either A3 or A2 of you can stand to carry around an A2 folder. Personally having all these bits and pieces - a bag, A4 pieces as well as A3 gives me the impression that you haven't thought about your presentation.

For an interview to get into a university course, I would bring everything with me - which I did. It took several trips to the car, but I got into my course of choice which is the main thing!

      Thanks for the reply,

This is for a job interview, the one I posted about about a month ago. The one that was asking for "Graphic Designer committed and motivated staff to join our dynamic consultancy working nationally within the fields of: identity, literature, packaging, websites.
If you can balance creative flair with clear thinking and elusive commercial awareness, apply in writing”.....blah

I had given up heaing from then then I got a call 2 days ago to go for interview—So Tuesday it is.
I have been trying to get a job since graduation summer 2005 and have been freelancing amongst other things to make ends meet since—so am nervous about this.

As a printer, if I change a file for a design client, I know the color won't shift. But. If the design client sends an entirely new file, I check it to be sure the color won't shift. There are so many...

I think I am getting a bit better with the pen tool, but let me know if you see where I can improve? Also, if there are areas to improve the illustration style, thanks?...

This is something I made in my free time.

I'm not planning on going to art school or anything like that, but I still like drawing and designing, so I'm planning on doing it as a side thing....
