Hello! One of my college majors was design, but I basically haven't done anything official with it since graduation in 1997 as I ended up working in other fields. I want to try designing the save the date cards, invitations, programs, etc. for my upcoming wedding. I need to get an INEXPENSIVE, basic software package that will allow me to do this with some design flexibility, despite my rusty skills. Someone suggested Photoshop Elements. Opinions? Is this going to do the trick? It's less than $100 so that's a big plus. I don't want to invest $700 in InDesign. Thank you very much!

I suggest you to try CorelDraw X3, download the 30 days Trial version and see if it works for you. Yo can edit images, create layouts, vectors, etc.Originally posted by NdesnHello! Platform
I like the Macs, and I love those Mac vs. PC commercials, but I'll be using a PC. I hear there is more free shareware stuff available for the Macs.

you know, i've never used this software before but i always used to hear good things about it:
http://www.ragtime-online.com/
but if you're on a mac, i'd spring the $70 for pages.

whups, nevermind about ragtime. they discontinued the solo version, which was free.
how extensive of designs do you want to do?

I know, I know, but it's free and she just wants flexibility for one project.Originally posted by Exodus*Shudder*

We don't even have the general theme/colors down for sure yet. We need to get moving in January!
Programs (one color) and invitations (2 color???) will be mostly just text. Could be all text if need be. I may want to include, if possible, some kind of simple design element that I would create and use. I could rely on clip art if needed. It would probably be something garden-related...it's going to be late summer and we're into gardening. Stylized flower/leaves, fruits and berries, etc. probably just line drawn to use as border or background screen (NOT like a red clip art strawberry--something much more elegant). I'm pretty flexible at this point.
Save the date will be super easy--likely just a photo postcard type of thing.

You can also try Xara, it is very cheap for PC, like 75$ or something like that, specially if you are not going to use multiple pages. The only thing is that you would have to save your files as EPS for output (Print shops are not going to accept files Xara native files). But i insist, what you should use is Corel.Originally posted by NdesnWe don't even have the general theme/colors down for sure yet. We need to get moving in January!

Thank you, Piscosour. I will look into Corel. Side note: I was in Chile for a semester--lots of pisco around there.

For page layout, you could always give Scribus a go: http://www.scribus.net/
It's an open source project, so it's free, like the gimp, but it's not blindingly awful like the gimp
