Saw this yesterday and thought it was a great idea. Love the pharmaceutical style packaging. Bloomsberry does several designs, but this one caught my eye. I hope it's because it's a great design and not because I'm the target demographic though, eek! I'm only 28! It comes in a cardboard box very much like the ones that contain blister packet tablets, so looks even more like medication.

Is there another thread that has links to novel packaging designs like this? I couldn't find one, so I thought I'd start this and see what others have come across.

It's cute, but from a marketing viewpoint I would wonder if it's actually selling product. (I wouldn't even give it a second glance on a store shelf, so I'd never have read it if it hadn't been posted here.) "Novelty" might be a more appropriate adjective than "novel". To paraphrase Sergio Zyman: "The purpose of packaging is to sell more stuff, to more people, more often and for more money." I don't think this will.

That's a bit dangerous! Better not market that one to kids. I love interesting packaging. One day I'll get into packaging.

Haha: KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHOCOHOLICS.

Might be right. From their website they sound surprised at their own popularity. I might have noticed it as my husband works in the pharmaceutical industry, so I see a lot of packaging like this and having it in the candy aisle make me do a double take.

It's neat in a kitschy niche sort of way. It's something you would buy as a joke in a boutique shop like Spencers.

That would never sell in a regular market. People would see the packaging and glance right over it.

I have to say I don't like this at all. Not only is it a bad design for chocolate but I'm really against blurring the lines between medicine and candy, I just think it's a really bad idea and that includes gummy vitamins and chewable aspirin.

It never occurred to me that kids might want to eat medicine as a result of seeing this. I got a bar from World Market whilst dashing in to get my occasional fix of jammie dodgers (UK cookie) and thought it would make a nifty gift for a mate of mine who is turning 40 and keeps ranting to me about the silly botox mums that congragate at her kids school. Vitamin sweets for kids seems a little scary tough.

edit: are there any websites out there dedicated to interesting packaging design or has antone else come across something that grabbed their attension for being packaged unusually?

None that come to mind Frankster, but I'd be interested to see where this goes too.

I have a great book ok loan from the public library at the moment. It's all graphic design from Japan. There is some wonderful packaging in there. I will see if there are any websites in that book and post them when I get home. The Japanese are way into their crazy packaging though Maybe all that origami.

Kool I agree completely .... I ate nearly an entire bottle of johnson and johnson baby asprin when I was 4 years old ... because it tasted just like orange candy. Obviously I pulled through, but I was sick for a few days. I don't think any medicine should look or taste like candy ... and I definitely don't think candy should look like medication.

You know, Kat, that reminds me of a scary story, where, basically, I almost killed my sister. I'm not going to go into the details, this was a long time ago, and it was unintentional on my part, in addition, we were often unsupervised as kids, because of many life issues that my mom was dealing with, but suffice it to say that I didn't know that such yummy medicine could be bad for you (I was 4), and fed my sister (2 years younger) a much larger dose than she was able to handle.

Fortunately, I left the aspirin bottle on the table, and my sister's stomach was pumped, but it could have turned out much worse than it did.

Thus I agree with you and Kool, medicine shouldn't be "candified" in any way.
