  • Guidelines for designing for Asian market

    #1
    Greetings all

Does anyone know of any resources/books I can consult that covers cultural issues to consider when designing collateral for Asian markets? E.g. imagery to avoid, colours, etc. Or, do you have personal experiences that you would like to share?

    Any help will be appreciated

    Cheers
    Deon

Think Red. Asians LOVE red in ads. Avoid the Ying/Yang symbol, make pigs fat and succulent, and use toony drawings when you can. Starbursts (explosions, in the Chinese language) are fair game, as much as we may hate them.

As far as resources, I don't have any, but you may want to surf the .cn websites for ideas...

Depends on what country you're talking about. The current state of design in Asia is very new and not authentic. It is lacking structure and brand unity. My advice, keep it simple and new. feel free to email if you have any questions as I'm right in the middle of it at the moment.

Design in Asia is new? That's news to me... They've probably been advertising longer than anyone.

Haha, I know the green hats one!

Yes, red and gold are great colours to use. I remember seeing an article about the redesign of a popular Chinese biscuit packaging (Sorry, can't find it to show). A Western company designed it without knowing the market at all. Traditionally these biscuits are eaten at certain times of the year and are individually packaged in red and gold.

The Western company redesigned it in white packages as well as black packages. Perhaps they thought this was more modern? Anyway, it was well criticised because to the Chinese buyer, these did not look like celebration cookies. They looked like sanitary pads!

It's easy to f**k up if you don't do some research first. A school example of this is an ad made for some kind of pill that would make you feel better. It was represented in a cartoon with 3 "frames". The thing is, the company forgot that the readers in Arab countries where it was supposed to be launched read from right to left, not from left to right, so the way they saw it, you would actually get sick taking this pill.

Again, depends on what country you're talking about. I have been working in SE Asia for the past 6 years as a graphic designer. In Japan, they have a heavy influence of brilliant bursts of color and cartoon like advertising and have been doing it for a while, but it hasn't moved much in the way of creativity in the past decade. Thailand is up on the rise with some new and origional work... one to watch. China is still very new and not original, especially when it comes to retail and advertising graphics. The actual rules and art of graphic design is new in the world by history standards, but the roots are very much from the west. The current state of graphic design in Asia is moving quickly but... they have a long way to go!

So does the man wear the green hat, or the cheating wife? Is it just any old green hat or is there a certain "cheating wife" style? I like this idea.

                          Asian design

I'm from Asia particularly in the Philippines, and we are in the graphic design business for the past years. When it comes to graphic design stuff we are very keen to details, the color, the kind of design we make sure it really catches the attention and of course a design that we can be proud of.

So if you're looking for an extra-marital affair, just look for someone in a green hat.

Yum. I do love salmon sandwiches. The bakery near me do great smoked salmon bagels. It's not a bagel shop so they don't jack up the prices.

It won't stay this way ... but, they have to get all the bugs worked out first and then we will worry about cosmetic issues
