    Can anyone give me some clear idea about ensuring I am sending my PDF's to print using the optimum settings.

    I have recently moved from a job where I was a member of a team of designers and I took for granted that the Adobe Acrobat settings were all correct. However, now I am wholly responsible for what goes out to print - and it worries me a little - the company I am now with are a little loose with a lot of what goes out and I need to tighten up and I am a little wary of the existing settings, without knowing what's best.

    generally here we keep res at 300 dpi

    and use no compression whatsoever, ok its a big fiile sometimes
    but if you cant email it you can put it on a dvd cd or flashpen
    post it or take personally to printer
    printers DO like that believe it or not

            ha ha gutted mate.

            Having said that, I'm a Palace fan - I think we're doing Europe next year - oh! no we're not… another season of mediocrity the for us. You gong to Athens???

              Are you talking Distiller settings? Anyways... the whole shebang's covered here:

              Download it, print it out, bind it into something, read it several times, keep it in your top drawer.

                Dammit, I'm going senile...
                Print it on a colour photocopier if you can. There's some useful transparency stuff in there.
                Also, your "Optimise" title worries me. Optimising a PDF, in Adobe-speak, is reducing the file size for online proofing, [under Advanced Editing menu> Print Production. Don't confuse this setting with Press Quality settings. Some people have more success with the Reduce File Size option, [forget where, look in the Acrobat menus]; for online proofing file-size reduction.

                    Don't want to leave any confusion. When you can, have a look at the Acrobat Help. It should explain "Optimise PDF". It's just that the term's a bit confusing. Adobe mean to "bring the file size down to send online". "Press Quality" is a better qualuty for high-end printing.
                    Hope this hasn't caused more confusion.

                      We don't require a signature. The client can confirm a file to print or advise of corrections any way they see fit. A simple email reply of "Ok to print" is sufficient.

                      That's it! I just tested it out but hit a road block. I can't see an option for Hidden in PDF but printable. I'm on CS5. Any ideas if they did away with this option or if it's somewhere else?

                      Go with "plastic" sheets as BJMR suggested. Your portfolio will feel dated within a couple of months and you want to upgrade it and customize it for certain jobs. You will get back your money...
