  • Would you explain why a eps file gest so big?

    Hi!

I just converted a 5 MB .psd file in .eps format
and when I checked its size I could not believe it.

    It´s 42 MB!!!

So, I´d like to ask an expert here why is that.

Look forward to hear from you and understand it.

    Thanks!

I'm no expert but here's how I think it works: the default EPS standard encoding does not support compression--it's designed to be backward compatible with really old RIPs and other PS rips so it assumes this most straight forward mode. And also, because it's in 7 bit ASCII, not 8 bit binary, it requires extra bytes to encode the 8 bit/color channel translation. And each pixel in a 'straight raster' file requires four bytes a piece.

PSD on the other hand IS 8 bit and it does use a special (lossless) compression encoding-- by default.

    Does that help?
