Quin_uf, you protect yourself the same way that all small business's do. Rule #1 ALWAYS use a contract spelling out exactly what you are expected to provide and what the client is expected to provide. Rule #2: First time customers ALWAYS pay half down and half on delivery. The best way is to have a credit card authorization on file. If your client is hesitant to do these things there is probably a good reason. Rule #3 never send anything Hi res or vector until you have been paid. Proofs should be clearly watermarked PDFs with all the security you can attach to them. If a client really want's to rip you off they will. But if you have lots if paperwork and a credit card authorization it's a lot harder. I would advise every designer to spend a day hitting all the collection attorneys in town and offering your services at a discount for their services in return. BIG GIANT RULE ABOVE ALL OTHERS if you want to be a freelancer. Take some business courses! You are in effect a small business and there is a lot more to it than just design.

Should be on top of it but I need to find out more about watermarks and protection options. It's very true that freelancing isnt just about design, as I'm learning, more and more. You are effectivly a small business and with that you are every dept in one i.e marketing, creative AND legal.
