  • Vintage / Retro Advertising Art and Clip Art Sources

    #1
    Hello,

I'm interested in designing 'period' works, specifically offset and graphic design from the mid-century modern period (1950s).

So I began looking for clip art, design elements and ad art from this era and have found it difficult going!

With so much interest in 'retro,' and so many designers from this period now famous, I figured there would be a lot of choices for the graphic designer, but I found only one (!) company who sells authentic clip art and images from the late 1940s through the early 1960s.

That's the Retro Ad Art collection from Ad Graphics: http://www.retroadart.com/

Is that all there is? There was so much produced in the past, isn't any of it available today for licensed use? I can't believe I'm not finding anything else out there!
Where's all the stars, Loewy boomerangs, squiggles and swirls? The faces and patterns, illustrations, etc?

Can anyone recommend any other sources for authentic clip art, images, and design elements from this period?

    Appreciate the help!

    Here's a link to a similar thread.

These also came up in a Mamma.com search:
    squaresville.com
    fontmart.com
    adgraphics.com
    retroadart.com
http://graphicdesign.about.com/cs/clipart/ (even though I hate this site they may have a resource for you.)

How come you don't do your own? Amazon has a number of few books on 50's advertising. It's easy stuff..

If you want complete authenticity, it's very difficult to get it right -- that's why the new repro stuff is out.
I am looking for work from the original designers, either original work from that period to license for use, or period ad art / design booksto study from.

I did find another source, csaimages.com

Top-notch material. The books are expensive but at least all the work is licensable.

I'm surprised that I can't find old (paper) offset books and illustration/ad art books. Back in the day I thought every smalltown printshop had reams of material! Where'd it all go? Not on eBay, not online at all.

also don't forget to try the library of congress. They have an amazing assortment of period advertisements, product photos and historical photos.

Not sure what the link is, just google it with something like < +'library of congress' +photos >
