  • ULTIMATE Project Table... Help!

    #1
    Ok friends... I need help.

I have a client that is in custom carpentry. I'm not talking about carving wooden ducks here. I'm talking about some insanely nice stuff from cabinets to closets to full on kitchens, dining rooms, stair cases, mantles.... etc, you get the point. So we are going to trade some of the project costs for a custom project table. This is where it gets tricky. We are going to use this table for several things.

We will use it as a project table to lay out big projects, to collaborate, to scratch out ideas... etc.

We will also use it to meet with clients, almost like a conference table but less formal.

We will probably build stuff on it, play games on it, who knows!

It needs to be fun and functional. I want it to be unique. I would like it to have some storage... maybe some secret compartments (big enough for a handgun).

It's got to be big (6 x 6) and sturdy. It will be tall, as we plan to use stools around it.

    So, the help:
If you could have a custom project table... with the basics above in mind, what type of features would you like to see the table have? What crazy ideas would you incorporate?

    Any and all ideas appreciated!

Electrical outlets, maybe in the middle? Recessed and with a little door to cover them up when they're not in use. Same for ethernet/phone/dsl jacks and maybe a router, that is if you aren't wireless... If you have a projector and it's not ceiling mounted, it would be cool to just flip that up from beneath the table too.

Wait. If you do that, you won't be able to have any liquids on the table, in case of spills. So cup holders? LOL

Might be easier to just have it dispense holographic lasagna.

Why you need a handgun? (forgive I am UK)

You don't want outlets in the top of the table. Very hard to maintain the functionability of that kind of thing unless the table is one-use dedicated. Crap from dust to candy goo will get in there and mess up the hinges/latching mechanism/threading and the outlets themselves. They would also have to be the ground fault breaker type.

I'd put a glass top on it with a diffuser underneath and light it from below. Sectioned or whole. Instant light table. Half inch glass can take a good amount of abuse.

You might want to get a custom hard cover for it of some kind if you plan on cutting or gluing models together or having parties. The kind that is cut to fit just the top so the sides and legs are still showable. No sense ruining a beautiful custom table top.

All good ideas... thank you! Keep them coming though!

PD = good points about the table cover. Not sure what kind of material though? I would want to be able to store the cover away somewhere, so it would need to fold up or roll up or something.
