  • Interesting question...

    #1
Hello everyone. I've recently stumbled on a website that had a lot
different currency images and noticed the awesome
detail in which most are printed.

Does anyone know if there is a program out there that would convert a
real image into something like this? Or does anyone know what you call
this style of design or drawing?

Similarly, does anyone have any experience creating "certificate looking"
fancy lines? [did that make any sense to anyone?]

I hope someone has the answer to these questions. I would look online but
I don't even know where to start.

    Thank you.

That's driving me crazy ... there's a term for it and it's on the tip of my tongue, but I can't remember it right now. And there's software to help create things like that, but much of what you see is also just old school engraving (maybe not so much with modern money).

It's called etching. The design is drawn onto copper places and run through a press. It's a pretty neat process, I took an etching class awhile back. Not sure how you can recreate the look digitally though, I'm sure there's a tutorial out there somewhere.

There's something called excentro for the Mac that makes guilloche patterns, but it doesn't create the engraving style you're looking for on imagery.

Great find, Craig! There's a demo available for download...if you do that, make sure you get the separate PDF manual downloads. Now I got something new to play with on the weekend!

on a slightly related topic, I was told that banknotes were printed using Rotary Gravure. This process results in you being able to feel the ink on the note (mmm, bumpy!) and was a way to deter forgers/detect forgeries.

But then again, that was umptysomething years ago. Anyone care to correct/confirm my aged memory?

I saw a doco about the money printing process, and they showed artists that inked those portraits onto huge sheets of card, then they scanned em and tidied them up on the computer, and shrank them down and made them 'money sized'.

hmmm. a bunch of talented graphic designers talking about how to create money....

is someone going to check the window for Pizza delivery vans which don't move, or mysterious helicopters hovering over the forum?

                      Doco?

Wiggy-baby, is "doco" really what they call documentaries in Australia?

                      Australia is where Kalgoorlie is.

                        yep

Kalgoorlie is about 8 hours drive from where I live, which is pretty close by Aussie standards...

Wiggles, are you sure they call them docos, not doco-babies?
