Ok so i finish my HND next week and i was in a Print shop today getting my final designs done for a show. So im talking to the printer guy and he asks me about doing some work for him.

I tought great, i have no real world exp, so this is perfect.

Ok so i ask him, "what sort of work". He relpys, "just some take away menus, and a business card here and there. So i was like, "well yea, il clean floors if you want".

Then he talks money, well for a menu, which he reckons will take about 5 hours max, would be the same as 2 hours work in McDonalds, and the business cards even less.

So now i am dumfounded but still intrested in the work "slave labour" because i have no real world exp and it will give me contacts to build on.

If you were in the same postion, would you do the work and not worry that its paying buttons?

What do you mean by 5 hours is the same as 2 hours at McDonalds? As in pay?

If you look at it as an internship, then it should be ok.

When I did my degree, we had to do 60 hour internship as part of our course (and do a presentation about it). Whether the internship was paid or unpaid was up to us and our employers.

Think of some terms that you want out of this internship. Eg. A reference, right to use stuff for your portfolio, regular and honest feedback on your design pieces and work ethic etc.

You should also have an hour limit for your internship. Either by hours like what I did (60 hours) or by a period of time like 3 months.

Your employer can look on it like a probation period.

Yes that sounds like a way. I was talking to a friend and i was explaining i dident want to be used because im new to the real world and dont have a clue about standerd rates and stuff. He put it into a weird way but i understand what he ment.

The printer is for sure "using" me for cheap design work, BUT if i see it as me also using him for discount print, and making contacts while learning how the whole print side of things work. Then i gain more in the long run.

I'm not sure what McD's pays these days, but I'm guessing its min. wage. If you have no R/W experience, this might be good for you, but be sure to get some kind of contract in place so you get paid. And who knows, it might turn out to be a sweet portfolio piece.

Write up a contract and if get a discount print clause written into it then.

But just a note, when I worked for a print shop in my first year of design school, I was getting more than minimum wage and I got all my printing for free. We had to keep a tab of our printing (with the intention of paying it at the end of the month) but at the end of each month, the boss just looked at the tabs and chucked it in the bin.

So maybe you could say you get $x of printing for free (or at cost) while you work under them?

I wouldn't do it if he's just after some cheap labour. If it was an internship he probably would have used those words.

Maybe let him know that your interested, but you'll try and land a position with much better pay first. Make sure you are the one in control and don't let excitement and other emotions make your decisions for you.

I would expect for a small job here and there for someone with no experience, you'd still get paid at least double what a burger flipper would get.

It seems to me that he sees enough newbies to the industry that he knows he can toss offers like this out and someone will do it. In the mean time he's billing the customer full rate and well, raking in on the cash.

Don't put yourself out there so low that you are burning yourself out for a pittance. That alone has driven many new designers right out of the industry.

Sounds like he's taking you for a ride experience or not. Working for pricing removed… you might as well be working for free. Knowing his estimate for the menu is five hrs you can almost guarantee yourself 10+ are going to go into it. At which point might as well be making shoes in a foreign land. However, if the experience is more important then the pay take what you can get…

If you want experience, design for yourself or find some design challenge ideas (NOT CONTESTS).

Less pay, but not by much.

It's just a place holder. A new logo will eventually replace it

If your client has already seen your website, I wouldn't push the samples/sales angle. Be prepared to listen, and yes to bring business cards.
