  • Already have a BFA.. just not in Graphic Design..

    #1
For the last 6 months I have worked for a retail store, and sold my art in galleries. I had taken a few GD courses in college, therefore, the store put me in charge of making all the signs for the store/website design. VERY basic stuff, just used photoshop 4. Anyways, I would like to get some more formal training in graphic design. Being in Colorado, I am looking into taking the 2 Graphic Design/Web Design Certificates at the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design. There are also other side courses to take, so you end up with a nice course load. These courses are not for credit, but they still aren't cheap. Its a really great art school, but i just don't have the cash to go back for a 2nd BFA.

Is this the best choice I have or is a 2 year degree for a 2 year school better?

    Thanks for the help/Advice!

you could consider an MFA - there are a few 3 year programs out there (RISD, Yale, CalArts) that will do a 3 year program for people with non-GD undergrad degrees. you tend to get a lot more financial aid for an MFA than for a BFA so it may not be as impossible as you may think.

i think that continuing education classes and a certificate from a GOOD design school are much much better than an associates from a community college; they will also hold more weight with a potential employer.

By 2-year degree do you mean an A.A. from a community college? A.A. degrees usually will require courses that you've already taken like writing composition and basic math, history, and science requirements. You can transfer credits and petition out of them, but no reason to go for an A.A. if you already have a bachelor's.

Pix Z there are also 2 year AS degrees which usually forgo the general education classes and only focus on the core degree program.

The transfer of credit thing can make the second BFA easier (and cheaper) to get. I went that route. Took 2 years to do the second set of courses, and it's all focused. No Gen-Ed. You could probably do it faster than 2 if you utilize summer and evening classes.
