We saw one run at a place we visited a few months back. It was running board (which is the vast majority of what we would be running) and we were very happy with what was coming off of it as well as the...

I want to create a logo, very similar to this...

Only difference is the text. Im not a pro with this stuff but i have been working with photoshop/illustrator a lot over the past 12 months. My friend who is a bit of an expert was struggling to do this.

    So.... Questions
    1. Best program to do this, am I doing it right trying to do it photoshop/illustrator.

    2. If anyone has seen a guide to do this, please give me a link.

    3. I have been doing some Googling and havent got great results, but I think im searching for the wrong thing. What is the correct term for this graphic.

    Thanks
    Joe

if you are making a logo do it in illustrator. i would set the text the way i want it, then overlay it with circles.

"There's something about turning the pages of a book or magazine and the felling of rubbing your hands across the words."

This is my pen tool. There are many like it, but this one is MINE. My pen tool is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. My pen tool without me is useless. Without my pen tool, I am useless.

there is no grey area when it comes to 1 color logos.

I know there was a previous post that had a couple methods for similar treatments. Seems like they were trying to get a similar effect to the Sex in the City movie poster. Danged if I can find it though.

Good memory Yoss, here's that thread.

It's a little different, but it may help.

I actually have a font on my home computer that imitates that exact message-board look, no 'treatment' needed. I'm sure it was a freebie though, so the EULA may prohibit commercial use (which would include a logo). I don't remember the exact name of it though, I'll do a moment of searching and see what I can come up with. Otherwise I'll try to remember to look for it when I get home.

This one is similar to the font I have, but the one I have actually has little 'reflections' included for each of the led lights that's 'off'.

Ever notice we've all stopped saying things like, "Logo? That ain't no logo", to pixel-driven stuff like this?

                [sigh]

Any font I suggest to you won't help with the star however.

Good Point. what i did before (to get the background, was find an un-lit pixel/led in the smooth criminal, define it as a pattern, then filled a layer, giving me the background. But getting the text to light up was a completly different matter. I could do it, but the glow just wasnt there. and it took me ages to do half a letter. So i figured that there must be an easier way.

I did find the font, it's LED Board. As I suspected, it is free for PERSONAL USE ONLY. If you download the font, a text file is included which lists the designer's email address, perhaps you can contact him about commercial/logo use.

Also as I suspected, no star in the character map.

Yeah, but you gotta admit, creating a rasterized effects-heavy "logo" with limited use can have its drawbacks too.

And pixel-dependent logos don't help production techs either.

Sorry Frogger, not intentionally centering you out of the herd, it's just that I just came through another 'almost sleepless nights' due to having to deal with a program filled with unscalable sponsor logos.

As Mr. Burns would say, "I'm sorry, it's my problem, I'll deal with it. Coffee? Cream? Sugar?"

I would set up a grid of circles (use things like align and repeat/copy to make everything spaced the same) and then lay the text you want on top and delete out the circles you don't need (a mask may work, but you might be chopping off circles doing that). To give it a "glow" look in vector I'd use a radial gradient of white to yellow (or whatever color you want). You could do a nice big raster version that's more elaborate with the glow effects in photoshop after you get text all set.
                              Keep firing @$$holes!
