  • INdesign CS4 error code5???

Sorry to double post but I posted this in the Adobe section
    and got crickets......

'So I am working on a 52 page document, its a year book, with lots of pics I was half way through.
I save all the time - I am not on an APS UPS - we had a power outage. And when it came back I couldnt open my file it said

"The file is damaged and cannot be recovered (Error code: 5)"

Is there any hope - or am I going to be drinking 5 cans of redbull tonight!!!!!
    HELP!'

PS. Drank 1 redbull already - waiting on the other 4

    Hows the red bull going?

I have never used ID but I found this ... most of what I have found say it's not repairable but this one seemed hopeful.

Error Code 5 unfortunately is a designation for a corrupted or damaged file.

However that is just the code, there are ways we are going to try to fix this, so hang in there!

Sometimes with the Indesign software, the Preferences file be damaged and that will cause not just inDesign files, but also the application itself to behave very erratic and sometimes unresponsive.

So here is what we are going to try first:
    --Removing/Recreating InDesign Preferences --
    • Close the InDesign application
    • From the Finder menu bar (located on the Apple Menu bar) and click on Go
    • From the Go menu, select Home.
    • This opens to your Home folder, where you will now locate and open the Library
    folder.
    • Within the Library folder, locate and open the Application Support folder
    • Open the Adobe InDesign/Version 3.0 folder .
    • Locate and rename these two files the same way, as the examples in the
    parenthesis:
    - InDesign SavedData file (for example, to InDesign SavedData.old)
    - InDesign Defaults file (for example, to InDesign Defaults.old )

    • Once you have completed this, relaunch InDesign (InDesign will now create two new preference files in place of the two you have just changed.

    • Now try to open the inDesign file you were experiencing issues with opening.
    • If the problem still persists, with the file not opening or InDesign application still not functioning properly, you can restore the 2 .old files, by deleting the 2 new preferences files that were created in there place and taking the .old extension off of the original files.

Again I must stress an Error code: 5 is not a good code when it comes to the functionality of a file, but I will work as well as I can, to see if we can try to get this file functioning again.

I see you mentioned you tried Diskwarrior at the beginning of this post. If the steps I have just recommended, do not help resolve this damaged file issue, keep that utility handy you may just have to use it again. But let's see what happens with these new troubleshooting steps for now.

I await your outcome and update. Thanks!

Also there is a good guide to replacing your preferences here - http://forums.adobe.com/thread/526990

      Two other things -

      1. Have you got Hidden Files and Folders visible. Within the same location of your corrupt indesign file, there maybe a IDLK file, this is a file that is created to prevent other people opening the file while you have it open, (InDesign Locked File). If you see this, compress it to a zip or sit file, move it out of that folder and then delete the idlk file (keeping the compressed version just in case).

Then try to open you InDesign file. You may lose a tiny bit of work - but it might just get you back up and running.

      2. InDesign also keeps a backup of your file. Check your InDesign preferences for the location of the backup folder. Here you may find a slightly old but usable file. (by slightly old I mean a few hours work may be lost, it could be a few minutes, depending).

To be totally honest I don't think fudging the preferences or anything is going to solve this problem. But it's always a first port of call when something goes wrong. But I don't think it helps in this case sorry to say.

I've heard of others with a similar problem and there is a weird solution. It involves Markzware InDesign to Quark conversion. Basically it roundtrips the file to a Quark Conversoin and then Quark to InDesign. While I've heard this offered as a suggestion to fixing the error I've not heard any results from this.

Perhaps contact Markzware and ask them if this Error Code 5 has been successfully fixed by roundtripping a conversoin from InD2Quark and then Quark back to InDesign.

Thanks - @ kitty the redbull didnt work I fell asleep and got up back in the early am (as you can see by my post)
Also didnt find a 'Adobe InDesign/Version 3.0 folder' so that didnt work

          @eugene
I know about markzware from my numerous 'HELP ME"search on the internet - so I tried a 60 day full demo version of quark and quark couldnt open it. I think it may take longer for them to get back to me - so I have already started recreating - sigh- my file. Taking extra care to store a back up file on my external harddrive.

I didnt have an IDLK file -strange- it was there when I was saving - I may try the preference thing just incase.
          Thanks anyway.

Not that it solves this problem, but just a thought for the future...

I've had a couple of 100 page catalog/magazine projects I've created in InDesign lately. I'm VERY good about saving (learning that lesson after lots of losses early on!). But, I'm also slightly paranoid about it... with that large a document, who knows what could go wrong and when.

I've started saving a copy of the document, either at the end of the day, or after I've gotten a large amount of work, or something complex done. I work off of my main file, but know that if something were to go wrong, I've got that copy just in case.

Just a thought. And hey - I know it's a bitch to recreate lost files, but at least it always seems to go faster the second time.

If you go to File New Book

And then insert the file into the book - then use the Book panel sub menu to Package the book???

That is the only wild guess I have, it probably won't solve it though. But no harm in trying I guess?
