  • GIF or PNG?

    #1
Hello All - I do hope I'm posting in the proper forum so forgive me if I'm not.

I have created a small badge in photoshop cs3 that has some animation done with glint/star brushes. My problem is: what is the correct file format?

Go to (Warning website is VERY NSFW!) http://www.verticalkitty.com/links/ to view the round badge at the bottom that says 'TEST' to see what I'm talking about. Note that the edges of the badge are not crisp and have a rough white outline. I did file - save for web & devices - gif... see the attachment for details.

When I save the file in the png format, the edges are smooth and crisp but there is no animation.

Goal: for the badge to have a transparent background, crisp edges and the glint/stars animation.

Any insight from anyone is truly appreciated!

If you do your animation in flash you can export to a .gif it will give you more control over the quality.

Browser support for animated PNG format (APNG) is spotty. Given the choice between animated GIFs and PNGs, I'd go with GIFs — at least until all the major browsers get on board with APNG.

I am using gif format but it's not solving the problem. What program do you recommend to create the art?

Would Adobe Flash be my best bet?

regardless it'll be hard to get a gif with transparency to have nice crisp edges, especially if it's a wide range of color.

If you create it in Flash it should eliminate your need for transparency, so the gif should look better.

If you don't go the Flash route, here's a link to a YouTube video for creating GIF animations using Photoshop CS3.

If you change your matte color from white to a dark grey it will be much more seamless.

thanks so much to all who responded to my question! I just love this forum and everyone's input is so valuable!

I will be purchasing the Adobe Flash software since I am designing more and more graphics and websites.

No need to use Flash for that.

Is there any reason it needs to be transparent? You could just export it with the background grey colour in the matte and be done with it.

I should clarify, use flash to export a gif, without using transparency – but I guess you could do that in PS (never used the animation aspect of PS)
