I'm looking for a program what makes the background of a pic transparent so I can place in an image so it will appear as a graphic sin background for Windows Seven?

For years, I've used NBOS Fractal Mapper v1; it's a fantasy map creation program that has a symbol option that removes the most numerous color (usually the background) and has a sort of floating option in which you can move it around. I've created a lot of really good dioramas with it, but, NBOS's latest version that is compatible with Windows 7 messes up my images to the point I can't create dioramas anymore.
I was wondering if anyone here knows of a good substitute program I can use for Windows Seven?
