  • Illustrator Gradient mesh help needed...

    #1
I need to find a good tutorial on how to effectively use the gradient mesh tool in Illustrator. I have used this program for a while now, but it's always for logo re-creation, type work or geometric type illustrations, and I want to start creating more 'organic' pieces. Anybody out there know of a good site or book or something that'll help me develop this more?

    Thanks in advance!!

Hey, Jason...when you find one, let me know too! I refused to use it for years, cause I couldn't control it. Finally, my son suggested I used the lasso tool to capture specific points (I had never used the lasso tool for 4 years, couldn't figure out why it was there!) and it helped alot. I have attached my rose picture....the rose was done in mesh and the lasso tool, as was the vase...Had you done that with the points? Am I just late in the game?</div>

Hey guys, I know I have seen one somewhere....can't really remember where it was though. You can try TIEMdesign magazine, or the tutorials on that site, they have alot of illustrator tuts. What do you want to know about gradient meshes?

          PrintDriver,

Thanks, for the link! I haven't perused the entire tutorial, but I think it's just what I was looking for. I wonder how many output issues there are for these meshes. I won't even dream of using spot colors for this kind of thing. The transparancy 'feature' still gives me a shudder sometimes.

Color issues are less of a problem if spot colors are used and defined in the color palette just like the tutorial suggests. It is important to define your colors, even if they aren't PMS spot colors. In case no one's noticed, in Illustrator if you just grab a color out of the color bar in the color palette, it doesn't appear in the swatch pane unless you drag it there. Makes it HELL to do a replace.
Color can be a problem if you expect to match all of them in a mesh, especially tints, but if you don't use em at all, well, you get what you get.

I do large format stuff and most of my vendors, MOST of them but not all, have kicked the transparency and drop shadow problems to death. Every once in a while though, someone gets really 'creative' with their file setup....

Good luck with the tut! (the pinkiness almost made ME barf. LOL)

I haven't a clue how that mess thing works or how to control it. So i just airbrush in PS. I would like to know though.

I was able to see the PDFs you uploaded, so that was OK.

Unfortunately, both designs say nothing to me. Not being Christian or into romance novels I would never even look at them. Objectively...

Note: The CC updates were released this morning. On a Mac, you must be running Lion or greater (10.7 or 10.8) to run Photoshop. I'm not sure about the other apps yet.

I took a look at luxe -- looks good. Looks like it's digitally printed -- would that be as good as litho or letterpress?
