  • How to deal with mistakes- words of encouragement?

    #1
aaaaaaaahhhh.... I made a mistake and it went to print and worst of all- it is the largest thing I ever had to make for my job, a huge banner hanging in a super busy public place!

I can't stop dwelling on it

words of encouragement? How do you all deal with mistakes that have gone to print, thus being eternally displayed somewhere for someone?

What kind of mistake was it? Misspelling? wrong color? Upside down image?

I made a pretty huge mistake a few months back, costing the company quite a bit (luckily we broke even). I overlooked some jumbled text after importing a file into illustrator from a corel draw file.

Anyways, my boss told me about a few mistakes he made in his past and mine was nothing compared to that. The worst thing you can do is to let that mistake effect your performance for the worst in the future. We all make mistakes.

You mean like this one I took at my local store

Well ... it happens. It's not nice. But just have to take it on the chin. I get really upset even if doing an inhouse check and there is a mistake on it. I honestly get sick to the pit of my stomach. So much so that everything I do or have on or had on and not gone to print gets another thorough proofing.

Recently an advert went out that said "The most compressive" where it should have said "comprehensive" - I didn't type the document up, but somehow I was supposed to know it was wrong. I pointed out it was spelled correctly and a spell check would not have picked it up - even so, somehow it was my fault that I didn't read it? Even if I did read it I'd say "compressive is spelled correctly" and move on.

The fault with the process in my case was that it was not reviewed correctly nor did it follow the correct standard operating procedure when it left my desk. It was approved and used without sign off by someone else. Yet still my fault. Sigh.

Chin up and make sure it doesn't happen again.

It was a banner advertising our new menu items and I switched the descriptions of two items, EX "Chocolate Sundae: A scoop of vanilla ice-cream with....." and "Vanilla Sundae: A scoop of Chocolate ice-cream with....."

        Like that....ugh

Easily fixed by printing out little stickers with the titles and putting them over the correct titles.

I made a similar mistake on my first paying design gig and I dwelled on it for years. You're certainly not the only one who has made a high profile mistake.

Gee, if only relationship and marital problems were so easily solved.

You already have, but I find the best way to deal with a mistake is to notice it before the client (if you can), own up to it if it is your mistake, and offer a solution for the current project and how such a mistake can be avoided in the future.

I've made a few mistakes before. I feel bad, but I'm not the only one that should be proofreading. To avoid mistakes in the future, try and get more than 1 person (not including you) to sign off every job.

Sadly, it's the jobs that are screaming rush rush urgent that often get overlooked in terms of proper proofreading. And it's those jobs that usually need the most proofreading.

QFT, I've called out clients that have turned proofs around almost immediately before -Wow you proofed six pages of copy in less than five minutes... is your real name Steven Gordon?

anyways, it happens, it's how you deal with it that will be remembered.

Yeah, it makes me nervous when a client approves something super quick.

I usually let the account manager know if I suspect the client approved something without looking at the file. At least it gives the account manager a chance to take a look themselves.

There are other things to be considered with barcodes. I deal with them on a daily basis. Line width, quiet zones, and other factors play a big part in whether or not the code will scan.
