How has social networking played a role in your graphic design career? Has it played one, a significant one? What did it do for you in school, in obtaining jobs, getting ahead, etc etc?

Also, remember, when I say "social networking", I'm not talking exclusively about Facebook and Twitter and shit like that, it means, were your fellow classmates/friends able to tell you about job openings, internships, were you able to meet people that could hire you by mingling at AIGA events, did you put yourself out there and did it help people remember you, etc etc

It's given me a way to waste a lot of time. Beyond that, not much.

Same for me. Total time waster. I'm on LinkedIn, but I'm not looking for a job and usually forget to check up on it.

Oh yeah. I need to check that myself. I think it's been about 6 months....

I've gotten some small jobs through Facebook but that's about it.

I haven't really updated my LinkedIn profile with recent work... maybe I should get on that.

I don't think I even have a LinkdIn profile. Gotten several invites from clients/vendors, but I've just ignored them.

So far I only use social media for social purposes. I really don't freelance so I have no need to push my services.

I use SM more to keep in contact with colleagues, gather information, and keep up on news like product announcements.

I often advise clients to use Facebook and Twitter for promotional, marketing and public relations purposes. Five years ago, I also set up my own discussion forum similar to the GDF forum, but not about graphic design. It's doing very well and making some spending money (although I like the GDF forum better. ) A lot of the websites I/we build for people have social media components in them, like the ability to register, add comments/reviews/opinions, upload photos, interact with other visitors, etc.. When we advertise for jobs, I've found that targeting the relevant social media channels brings in a whole lot of good applicants.

So far, social media has mostly just meant an addition to the way I make a living. As far as personal interest or relevance goes, I've pretty much limited my social media activities to the GDF forum. I have a Facebook page and LinkedIn and Twitter accounts, but I have very little use for them.

I don't use social media for work, but I'd like to eventually. Especially when I start really pushing the freelance stuff. I use FB in relation to my blog, but my blog isn't really about work.
