• Need prof. graphic designer input for newbie

#1

Hi, I am a 31 yr. old stay at home mom looking to start school in the fall for graphic design. I need sooo much info as to what I should be asking the school's counsler etc. I can only afford to go to a 2 yr. tech school right now and I wonder if that is going to look bad on res. in future. also is it to early to atempt to get an internship? I live in a very SMALL town but we do have a printing company here that I thought might look good.

I'm really lost..Been out of the scene for 8 years and have no clue as to where begin?

Any and all help would be great!...please offer thoughts...

Hi amber, welcome to the forum. I'm sure you will get lots of replies tomorrow. In my experience, experience counts for a lot more than a degree of any kind. You will learn a lot of good basic info at school but the real world experience you could pick up at a local print shop will be invaluable. Good luck and don't be afraid to ask noobe questions here. I agree with Kool about onhand experience. However having a degree as well is very important. Having a good educational background in designer is very important, in my opinion. On hands experience teaches you how to use the tools, such as photoshop, indesign, and what not. School teaches you design, principles, theories, and etc. It's like..... what good is a pencil (tool) if you don't know how to draw (techniques, etc).

Anyways, it is very late and I am not making sense. I will try to reply again tomorrow.

While the degree is nice, as we've debated here in other threads, the schools are focusing too much on the tools and less on the design aspects. The history of art and theory for color and stuff are good. It's the portfolio that will get you in the door though. Not the degree. And definitely start in the print industry and move up to full time design. You will never regret it.

The portfolio is way mightier than the degree. It shows what you can do directly. I agree with with PD as far as learning printing basics first. Learning the foundation has an impact on everything else you do. Good luck, and welcome to the GDF!

A 2 year degree is more then enough. also get an internship ASAP. You wil learn more off of that they any classroom can teach you. do you habe any experience in GD or do you think it will just be 'cool' to do?

I agree. I mean...I have a BFA in GD and I feel like I needed to go to school but its different for everyone and you learn MUCH MUCH more on the job than you will ever learn in school - even in your first year on the job! I don't think the degree is what lands you the job, its definately the portfolio. There are tons of designers that have awesome jobs and never went to school for GD. Also...take a job...any job with a printer, or an internship or something. I won't do my usual preaching of the importance of this but you can find it in MANY threads on the board...LOL! You need the print knowledge to make it in GD and school just doesn't go into enough depth with it!

I say do the 2 year thing (like Joe said..it's plenty)...take an internship or whatever and welcome to the GDF )

Someone asked if I have experience with GD or if I thought it was cool. I have been interested in it for several years, just have 2 small children and was unable to go to school. I've been taking some independant self learning programs for psp 8 to see if it was something I wanted to persue. So far I am enjoying it alot. I want to learn more and hopefully make a career out of it.

Thanks for everyones advise it has been extremley helpfull!
I have an app. with the schools counsler to dicuss everything and decide whether or not I am going to persue. Then I will look into the printing place.

Thanks again!

Hey Amber,
I recently took a two year program at a technical insititute and thats exactly what it was. We learned a lot of technical stuff and we were given instruction on the software that is relevent to the field, but as far as design theory and conceptualization and things like that we got the short end of the stick.
