  • Hey guys, tomorrow is a huge day for me

    #1
I am transferring as a sophomore in College to UMass Amherst form the University of Tampa in FL. and I have a Porfolio review for acceptance into the studio art program there tomorrow. Im pretty nervous and i dont really know how they go over because ive only had one for Mass Art that was really informal.

    Any tips?

    Ah, ZooMass...
Have you changed residency? Cuz it's usually fairly easy for in-state students to get in. Dunno about out-of-staters.

Only thing I can advise is look over their portfolio requirements, be sure you understand what they want, and practice a simple presentation in case they ask you about specific pieces in your portfolio. I didn't go to school there but knew several people that did.
Their portfolio requirements are pretty strict regarding the submittal (you may already have done the submittal).

Have a really good idea of what you will say to "Why do you want to study at UMass?"
Be sure to do your homework regarding the school and possibly your interviewers. Be good with names. Remember them after they introduce themselves to you.

    Good luck!

oh yeah man, i got in no problem, but i was accepted into the social sciences college, because i never applied into the art school directly, and now that i am in, i am attempting to get into the art program. ive got a really wide array of media in my portfolio, ranging from 3d animation, to the traditional illustrated still life. thanks for the tips. i really appreciate it. i may shoot it all and post it on this site for critiques

          Don't f*** up.

But seriously? Be confident in your work and your abilities, don't BS, and be honest. You can BS when you get a few years of experience under your belt.

Bring fresh baked chocolate chip cookies.

No wait... that's a Canadian trick.

                  Ice cold beer?

Think of it as a design problem. What's the objective? To get into an art college -- or get into THAT art college? Why? What's unique about U of Mass' program that would fit you well?

Communicate what YOU hope, and expect to get from them. Remember that you're as much a client of theirs as they are of you. Afterall, it's YOUR time and money too -- and quite a lot of it.

Do they have what you need and would it be a good deal for you both? Have you articulated what you expect to get from them?

I think portfolio requirements have to be taken with a grain of salt. Entering art college should be based on thinking skills more than rendering/presentation skills -- which is what THEY should teach you. But they can't teach you to think like a good visualizer. You have to show them you know or have the potential to develop on that front. Don't shy away from bringing in backup sketchbooks -- especially if they show this passion for visual thinking and problem solving-- even if they may not look anywhere near as finished as your student portfolio work. Wow them at least as much (if not more) with your brain or your brain's growth potential, more than what you can do with your hands. That's what makes great grads and designers. And then all they have to do is teach your hands how to connect more fluently with those brains.

Passion for art and design -- don't hold back on expressing this honestly, even if you have to stumble for the right words. IMHO, a passionate frustration for wanting to be a professional creative is more valuable than pre-existing rendering skills. Connect the interviewers to this and you will connect with the interviewers passions as well.

                  Good luck!
