  • Plotter Purchase in the near future

    #1
Ok, so today I was talking to a friend who owns a couple of old (and I mean old) plotters that he is looking to unload possibly. And I have been looking for a cheapy one just for messing around in the basement sort of thing. The names I have at least heard of, but I know nothing about either one. I have not started my research on them yet, and he is cool enough to let me figure out which one I want, then take it home and try it and make sure it works, since he had to brush off about an inch of dust from each one to show me.

Basically it comes down to I have a mac book pro, and an XP loaded HP laptop for options for running software off of. I would prefer to run it out of Illustrator if possible, but if there is RIP/Driver software available it would have to work on one of the 2 computers that I have. I know that the parts are still being made for each of them and the drag knives are available still for each of them as well.

So the two plotters that I am looking at are:
    Ioline 100
    Mimaki 64 samurai cutter

Any thoughts/concerns/comments would be greatly appreciated since I know NOTHING about either one.

    Thanks!

if they are really that old, there may not be an illustrator interface for them. Or your illustrator may not be old enough to be compatible.

Our oldest plotter is about 8 years old, needs XP to run, requires a driver interface and really only works from a program with dedicated cutting controls - Signlab specifically.
Your first order of business is to see if there is a cutting plugin that will work with your newer version of Illustrator to run the plotter without buying a sign-soft.

Well my mac has CS5 on it, but my PC has CS3, so I was thinking that I would have better luck finding the drivers/software for that computer. I did some research last night and was having better luck finding stuff for the Ioline, every search I did for the Mimake only really found new wide format printing stuff.

I heard back from Ioline, and the customer service guy gave me a link for a bunch of software/instruction downloads so once I get my old PC back up I'll check it out

For the Mimaki, you're looking it up by product number right?
          Mimaki CG60-ST
          Might get you more info
I was able to find the users manual and driver for windows xp on the Mimaki site.

The Mimaki CG60-ST is known as 'Samurai'.
Hard to find anything without model numbers.
